Gavaskar hails 'Pakistan's bold attempt in spirited chase'

After India’s thrilling win in the final Test of the series at Chennai Australia and Pakistan also played a Test match that went down to the wire. Pakistan's bold attempt o chase down 490 runs ended 40 runs short but what a spirited chase it was. That’s what Test cricket is all about where fortunes keep changing day by day and sometimes session by session. India’s win vindicated Virat Kohli's decison to delay the declaration to allow Karun Nair the rare chance of getting to a triple century. That only one Indian had got to the triple century mark should have made all the cynics realise that an achievement like that doesn’t happen every other day. Virender Sehwag has done it twice but then batsmen like Viru come once in a century and there won’t be another like him. Nair’s batting on the day was fantastic for the range of shots that he produced and in moving from 71 to 303 he got the most runs by an Indian batsman in a day’s play. Pakistan's second innings was held together...

As is the norm, all top four seeds -- Marin Cilic (No. 1 seed, World No. 6), Roberto Bautista Agut (No. 2 seed, World No. 14), Albert Ramos-Vinolas (No. 3 seed, World No. 27) and Martin Klizan (No. 4 seed, World No. 35) -- got first round byes. They will get into action only on Wednesday. Saketh, who was part of the draw ceremony loo...

Kohli flops once? Rubbish Anushka a 100 times!

While there’s hardly any field that Twitter doesn’t singe and create controversy, this year wasa particular bad year for social media and cricket. A high number of controversies weregenerated and cricketers were left fuming at the chain of events. A look at some of them… Kohli-Anushka: Runs, runs, runs and still tonnes of brickbats! While cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Sir Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma have been thebutt of Twitter jokes for their on-field performances, one struggles to think the last time Virat Kohli was in really bad form. Feels like another era.But he still has been facing the brunt of it thanks to his relationship with Bollywood actressAnushka Sharma. A long time back when he faced a period of bad form, instead of attackinghim, some wise aleck blamed Anushka and it trended. While it was in bad taste, social media would repeat the process whenever Kohli was in badform and lately when he has been in sensational form the Anushka jokes would be out evenin a rare ...

India will tour South Africa for four-Test series in late 2017: CSA

Port Elizabeth: Cricket South Africa says India and Australia will both tour for four-Test series in late 2017 and early 2018. CSA announced part of their fixtures for next season on Thursday, with trips by Bangladesh, India and Australia all confirmed. Bangladesh will play two Tests, three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games in September and October 2017. Australia will be in South Africa in February and March 2018 for four Tests, with exact dates still to be worked out. India will likely travel in late 2017, although CSA didn't announce dates for the No. 1-ranked team's Test, ODI and T20 tour. South Africa normally hosts a Test series over the year-end holidays but there's been doubt as to whether India was willing to tour at that time. Prandelli quits Valencia after one win in eight league matches

(Reuters) - Former Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has resigned as manager of Valencia after one win in eight Liga matches in charge, the Spanish La Liga club said on Friday. Prandelli, who had signed until June 2018 with Valencia's Chinese owners in October to become their ninth coach since 2012, is negotiating the termination of his contract. "Cesare Prandelli has communicated to Valencia Club de Futbol his irrevocable decision to resign from his position as coach, as of Friday, December 30th," the club said in a statement. "'Voro' Gonzalez will take over in charge of the first team squad," they said. After a 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon in his first match in charge, Valencia have lost four and drawn three, languishing in 17th place in the La Liga standings with 12 points from 15 games, above the relegation zone only on goal difference. Misbah ponders Test retirement after Melbourne drubbing

Pakistan Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq has hinted at calling curtains to his illustrious international career in the coming days after his side's crushing defeat by an innings and 18 runs in the second Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday. Misbah, who has been one of the most successful captains in the country's Test history, has received a flurry of criticism for his tactics after the side slumped to their fifth consecutive match in Australia. Following the defeat, Misbah insisted that he would make a decision regarding his retirement even as soon as before the third and final Test of Pakistan's series against Australia. "I think I need to think about it. I always believed that if I couldn't contribute to the team then it's no point staying there. I haven't decided [about Sydney] but let's see," the Express Tribune quoted Misbah as saying. The 42-year-old has been in terrible form in the ongoing series, having ma...

Starc brilliance earns Australia series victory against Pakistan

Mitchell Starc shone with bat and ball as Australia dismissed Pakistan for 163 to secure an innings and 18 run victory in the second test on Friday, the win giving the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Home captain Steve Smith smashed an unbeaten 165 and gave his bowlers 68 overs on the fifth and final day to run through their opponents after declaring their first innings at 624 for eight before lunch, a lead of 181 runs. In the end, they only needed 53.2 overs of the quota as pace spearhead Starc tore through the tail after tea, finishing with 4-36, with Pakistan crumbling on a benign Melbourne Cricket Ground pitch bathed in brilliant sunshine. Pakistan lost the first test in Brisbane by 39 runs but won admiration for their dogged fourth innings resistance. However, much of that acclaim evaporated on Friday as their shambolic batting display followed an abysmal effort in the field in the morning. Pakistan's 52-year wait for a maiden series win in Austra...

Tennis star Yuki vows to break back into top-100

Chennai: To avoid the rigours of Aircel Chennai Open qualification, Indias injury-prone tennis player Yuki Bhambri on Thursday vowed to break back into the top-100 in 2017. The 2009 junior Australian Open champion, who pulled out from last year's Aircel Chennai Open with an elbow injury and "made the mistake" of playing in the Australian Open without being fully fit, went though his first practice session here at the SDAT Stadium. "It's really tough not to be in the top-100. But I am highly motivated and I want to be back there," he said. "I trained in Thailand for a few weeks to acclimatise myself for Chennai and Australia. I even played in some sort of a warm-up tournament in Hong Kong to get some match practice. So I am looking forward to this." With two wild cards going to Saket Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan, Yuki had no choice but to find a route into the Chennai Open through the qualifiers. "Saket and Ram have been playing well,...

Opener Azhar Ali, who scored a magnificent unbeaten 205 in the first innings, was one not out, with Babar on three. Smith and tail-ender Mitchell Starc hammered Pakistan's bowlers in a 154-run partnership after Australia resumed on 465 for six in the morning. No competition with Parthiv, says Wriddhiman

Kolkata: India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha on Thursday brushed aside talk of competition with Parthiv Patel for a place in the Test cricket team after the senior Gujarat stumper impressed with the bat in the three matches he played against England. "There is no competition with him (Parthiv). I like to bank on my chances. I don't go into any competition," Saha told reporters on the sidelines of his club Mohun Bagan's practice session for a Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) local league match. Saha will be visiting his hometown in Siliguri and won't take part in the game. "Parthiv has played well and the team has won so it's good. Now when the selection will happen the picture will be clear." "I don't think about it. Parthiv is also trying to comeback into the fold, so whatever selectors will feel right is right. I have never regretted anything," Saha, who was ruled out of the side after picking up an injury in the second Test in V...

With Team India enjoying a nice break ahead of the One-day series that's scheduled to begin on January 15, the 28-year-old is likely to start the new season with a bang off the cricket pitch. The couple is presently vacationing in Utharakhand and made a surprise visit to the Anant Dham Atmabodh Ashram in Haridwar. Live: Smith slams 17th Test ton but rain frustrates Australia

Captain Steve Smith raised a composed century to push Australia to a 22-run first innings lead in the second Test against Pakistan but the home side's hopes of pushing their advantage were washed away by rain on day four on Thursday. Live Scorecard - AUS v PAK, 2nd Test - Day 4 A storm brought on an early tea just after Smith completed his 17th hundred and the remainder of the day was abandoned as rain continued to pelt down at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia had moved to 465 for six in reply to the tourists' 443-9 declared, with Smith unbeaten on 100 and Mitchell Starc on seven not out. Although Friday's final day was expected to be clear, the weather has left Australia little time to build a big enough total to pressure Pakistan's batsmen and force a result to wrap up the three-match series 2-0. Australia resumed after lunch on 395-4 and Smith pulled a short ball from Sohail Khan for four on the first delivery of the session to notch his 1,000th run for th...

Live: Azhar, Warner run-feast illuminates Melbourne Test

Two days of rain dampened the Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan but sunshine returned to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday as a pair of opening batsmen ignited day three with over 300 runs. Live Scorecard - AUS v PAK, 2nd Test - Day 3 Azhar Ali's epic unbeaten 205 raised Pakistan's hopes of a series-levelling victory after lunch before David Warner crushed them ruthlessly with an exhilarating run-a-ball 144 after tea. Warner, who shared in a 198-run partnership with Usman Khawaja, propelled Australia to 278 for two at stumps, having slashed the deficit to 165 runs after the tourists declared their first innings at 443 for nine. Although both players enjoyed reaching a string of milestones, their innings shared little else in common. Right-hander Azhar had to grind through six rain interruptions over the course of his nine-and-a-half hour knock and marched off unbeaten after 364 balls. Left-hander Warner had to labour in sapping heat and humidity, but o...

Live: Australia rally Pakistan after Azhar double-ton

A rampaging David Warner smashed a run-a-ball century to fire Australia to 278 for two and wrest back the momentum from Pakistan after Azhar Ali's unbeaten double-century buoyed the touring side on day three of the second Test on Wednesday. Live Scorecard: AUS v PAK, 2nd Test - Day 3 Warner's exhilarating 144 anchored a 198-run partnership with Usman Khawaja at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as Australia slashed the deficit to 165 runs after Pakistan's first innings declaration of 443-9 after lunch. Khawaja was unbeaten on 95 at stumps, with captain Steve Smith on 10 not out and Australia holding genuine hope of forcing a result despite the rain interruptions that blighted the opening two days. Warner's furious counter-attack sapped the morale from the tourists, who had also glimpsed a chance of a series-levelling victory following gritty opener Azhar's brilliant knock of 205. More galling for Pakistan was that Warner was reprieved on 81 when he was bowled by a n...

Live Scorecard - AUS v PAK, 2nd Test - Day 3 Azhar Ali finished unbeaten on 205 after Wahab Riaz fell for one, caught and bowled by paceman Josh Hazlewood for his 100th test wicket. Azhar's double-century, the highest score by a Pakistan cricketer in Australia, put the tourists well in front but their chances of forcing a result have been reduced by the rain that disrupted the opening two days. Ravichandran Ashwin's wife kept birth of second baby girl secret!

Chennai: Ravichandran Ashwin, the hottest spinner in the Indian cricket team, has had many highs this year, including being named the 'Cricketer of the Year' and the 'Test Cricketer of the Year' at the ICC Awards. However, the best of the highs was when he became a father for the second time. Prithi Ashwin, his wife, gave birth to their second daughter on December 21. However, she kept this under wraps until December 26. The real reason behind this has now been revealed. Prithi, being the good wife that she is, did not want to steal the thunder away from her husband's double win at the ICC awards. As she took to Twitter to make the announcement a good five days later, she also shared an anecdote of how the baby spent her first few days -- waiting out Cyclone Vardah that hit Chennai this month, besides the fifth Test against England in the city. I delivered carrom baby #2 on the 21st. She waited out a State-wide shut down thanks to the cyclone AND 5 days of Test ...

Smith wants Aussies to make Kohli a 'little bit angry'

Melbourne: Australia skipper Steve Smith wants his counterpart Virat Kohli "a little bit angry" when they play India at home in the four-match cricket Test series in February. Smith felt that getting behind Kohli would distract his focus from the game, which according to the Australian will be advantageous for the visitors. "He is a world-class player and he has, obviously, led the Indian team incredibly well over the last 18 months or so," Smith said on ABC Grandstand on Monday. "They have won a lot of games in that time and I think they have played a lot of cricket at home in that time as well. I think he has improved a lot body language wise". "He is a very emotional character out on the field, but I think he has improved a lot there". "I guess for us as a team it's trying to get him out of the strong emotional state and try and make him, I guess, a little bit angry and ruffle his feathers and things like that". "I th...

Live: Sri Lanka teeter after Lakmal's best dismisses SA for 286

Sri Lanka suffered a top order collapse and slumped to 37 for three at second day's lunch after Suranga Lakmal claimed career-best figures to help dismiss South Africa for 286 in the first Test at St George's Park on Tuesday. Live Scorecard - SA v SL, 1st Test - Day 2 Lakmal, who took four wickets on the opening day on Monday, completed a first Test five-wicket haul and finished with 5-63 as South Africa were dismissed inside the first hour of the session. The home side added just 19 runs to their overnight total, losing four wickets cheaply in under nine overs at the start of a sunny day. South Africa then made quick inroads through pace duo of Kyle Abbott and Vernon Philander to wrestle back control of the contest. Seven wickets fell in the bowler-dominated first session on a wicket expected to assist the bowlers throughout the day. Dimuth Karunaratne was the first Sri Lankan dismissed, getting an inside edge to Abbott and playing onto his stumps to depart for five. Kusa...

Watch: WBBL star Dottin hospitalised after on-field head clash

West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin was rushed to the hospital after suffering a suspected concussion during the Women's Big Bash League (BBL) clash on Tuesday. The 25-year-old, who was playing for Brisbane Heat, collided with her teammate Laura Harris at the deep mid-wicket boundary during the BBL game against Melbourne Stars at the Allan Border field, ESPNcricinfo reported. The incident took place in the 11th over of the chase when Meg Lanning hit seamer Haidee Birkett over midwicket and Dottin and Harris were the fielders at that time. The duo was trying to prevent the ball from crossing the boundary when they crashed into each other. Dottin seemed to have landed awkwardly on a kit bag and was taken off the field in a stretcher by the medical staff. Harris, on the other hand, was thrown into the picket fence, but she was well enough to continue playing at the ground until the end of the match, which Heat went on to win by five runs. The accident came a day after Heat'...

Green light for Russell's black bat in Big Bash

Image Courtesy: Big Bash League West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell was given the all-clear to use his black bat in Australia's Twenty20 Big Bash League on Tuesday after it was initially banned for leaving marks on the ball. Russell was banned from using the distinctive bat after it discoloured the white ball during the derby between his Sydney Thunder and the Sydney Sixers last week. Cricket Australia reversed the ruling on Tuesday after assurances that the bat had been modified with the addition of a "clear laminate cover" to prevent the problem recurring. "We're now satisfied that the bat will not compromise the integrity of the game by discolouring the match ball and we have granted approval for Andre to use the bat in any future BBL matches," said league chief Anthony Everard. The decision fits with the Big Bash League's embrace of novelty to attract and entertain crowds but it appears the arrival of the touted Dec. 25 match might have to wai...

Live: Azhar ton keeps Aussies at bay in Melbourne Test

Melbourne: Opening batsman Azhar Ali completed a rousing century and combined with Asad Shafiq to defy Australia's bowlers for an entire session as Pakistan moved to 232 for four at lunch on day two of the second Test on Tuesday. Live Scorecard: AUS v PAK, 2nd Test - Day 2 After rain washed out much of day one, Azhar and Shafiq resumed on 142-4 on an overcast day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and built a 107-run partnership to steer Pakistan safely to the first break. Azhar was unbeaten on 112, having notched his 12th century, with the in-form Shafiq on 48 not out when light drizzle brought an end to the extended session about 10 minutes early. Australia's pacemen were unable to garner much from the pitch and were despatched all over the ground as the old ball came to the end of its life. Having taken over 90 balls to strike his first boundary on day one, Azhar opened his shoulders and his sixth four was a glorious off-drive off paceman Jackson Bird to bring up the pair...

Bengaluru FC emerge tall, India finish with a mixed bag in soccer

Kolkata: Bengaluru FC provided the sparks, while the national men's team advanced in rankings despite an overall tepid show during 2016 -- a crucial year for Indian soccer that saw the authorities busy preparing facilities for the first-ever Under-17 World Cup on home soil. Endless speculation also kept the pot boiling about the fate of the I-League, that could become a tier-two competition with the All India Football Federation mandarins planning to make the cash-rich Indian Super League the main domestic tourney. Lending an individual sheen was goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who became the first Indian to play in the Europa League (Europe's equivalent to AFC Cup) for Norwegian club Stabaek FC. But it was Bengaluru FC that got the maximum accolades as they became the first-ever Indian club to reach the final of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup, the continent's second-most important club competition. The Blues of India, as Bengaluru FC are called, won thei...

Live: Australia hold edge after rain dampens Boxing Day cheer

Rain dampened the enthusiasm of a festive Boxing Day crowd but Australia were content to knock over Pakistan's top order and leave the tourists 142 for four on day one of the second Test in Melbourne on Monday. Live Scorecard: Australia vs Pakistan, 2nd Test - Day 1 Jackson Bird took two wickets, with fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood and spinner Nathan Lyon grabbing one apiece before play was abandoned after tea at a drizzly Melbourne Cricket Ground. Pakistan will hope opener Azhar Ali, unbeaten on 66, and Brisbane centurion Asad Shafiq (four not out) can hold firm when play resumes on day two to give Misbah-ul-Haq's side a chance at a competitive total. Thirty-nine overs were lost to the rain but Australia headed off pleased with their work after skipper Steve Smith lost the toss, having also hoped to bat on a green-tinged but mostly benign pitch. "The first hour tomorrow is going to be crucial," Bird told reporters. "If we can get one or two quick wickets, get...

Nair needs to build on unbeaten 303 for a great future: Dravid

New Delhi: India A cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid feels that India's latest triple-centurion Karun Nair needs to build on his exploits in the recently-concluded Test series against England in order to have a successful career. Dravid, who is also the head coach of the Under-19 side, said that Nair displayed ample "ability, hunger and desire" as the Karnataka right-hander hammered 303 not out during the fifth and final Test, becoming only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to register a three figure score in a Test innings. The former captain also hailed Lokesh Rahul, Jayant Yadav and Hardik Pandya who have all been mentored by him as part of India A squad. "Karun Nair had a fantastic Test match and is an incredible scorer. To score your first hundred and also go on to score a triple hundred speaks volumes for his ability and his hunger and desire. I am really happy for him and happy for Indian cricket to see boys coming through. He can go and build on ...

India pace spearhead Mohammed Shami is the latest victim of social media outrage after a photograph with his wife posted on Facebook led to nasty comments. Shami who was ruled out of the Chennai Test is still nursing his his right-knee injury and is likely to be out of action for a month. Dhoni to use coloured bat in IPL 10?

Rising Pune Supergiants' ( RPS) skipper, MS Dhoni may use coloured bats in the upcoming Indian Premier League season. Reportedly, Cameron Merchant, the cricket manager at Spartan Sports (the company which sponsors Dhoni's bat) has revealed that. Caribbean players Chris Gayle and Andre Russell are sporting coloured willows during the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2016-17. Following that, Dhoni too is likely to play with a coloured bat during the Indian Twenty20 extravaganza. And promoters believe that Captain Cool's association with coloured bats will make it popular. "Dhoni is more than welcome to use a coloured bat (in IPL). He is such an amazing role model, influential cricketer and kids look up to him," Merchant was quoted as saying in a report in Firstpost . 'India's 4-0 win will give them a sense of satisfaction for their loss in 2014'

Pakistan's wonderful fightback in the first Test at Brisbane was just the kind of advertisement that Test cricket needs. That match showed fortunes fluctuating wildly especially over the last two days as the Pakistanis didn't give up and almost pulled off what would have been Test cricket's most incredible win. Of course since England was not involved in that match it wouldn't have been called the 'greatest Test match of all' since for anything to be called 'the greatest' something English has to be there. Be that as it may, what that match has done is to show Test cricket in all its multi-colours and why it is the only format that tells you how good a cricketer really is. It is the only format where bowlers are actually trying to get twenty wickets unlike limited overs and T20 cricket where they are content to stop the flow of the runs in the quota of overs they have to bowl. If they get wickets then it is a bonus but the priority in limited overs and T...

Ranji: Tamil Nadu hammer Karnataka in just 2 days to enter semis

Visakhapatnam: Tamil Nadu outplayed Karnataka by seven wickets on the second day of their Ranji Trophy cricket quarter-final match here on Saturday. Resuming the day at 111-4 in their first innings, Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 152 but took a 64-run lead which proved crucial. Karnataka fared a tad better than their first innings of 88 to score 152 all out in their second innings, thanks to India opener Lokesh Rahul's 77. They set a target of 86 runs for Tamil Nadu and the latter chased down the target with seven wickets and three days to spare and entered the semi-finals. Karnataka, who were bundled out for a paltry score of 88 on the opening day, did their best to reduce Tamil Nadu's first-innings lead. Tamil Nadu were 111-4 on Friday and with experienced Dinesh Karthik unbeaten on 31 and Abhinav Mukund not out 3, they were expected to push up the lead. But Karthik failed to add any runs to his overnight score as he perished to seamer R. Vinay Kumar. Pacer Sreenath Ara...
