Chennai: Ravichandran Ashwin, the hottest spinner in the Indian cricket team, has had many highs this year, including being named the 'Cricketer of the Year' and the 'Test Cricketer of the Year' at the ICC Awards. However, the best of the highs was when he became a father for the second time.
Prithi Ashwin, his wife, gave birth to their second daughter on December 21. However, she kept this under wraps until December 26. The real reason behind this has now been revealed. Prithi, being the good wife that she is, did not want to steal the thunder away from her husband's double win at the ICC awards. As she took to Twitter to make the announcement a good five days later, she also shared an anecdote of how the baby spent her first few days -- waiting out Cyclone Vardah that hit Chennai this month, besides the fifth Test against England in the city.
I delivered carrom baby #2 on the 21st. She waited out a State-wide shut down thanks to the cyclone AND 5 days of Test cricket at Chepauk

I thought my water would break when we won that game and I was going to have the baby at Chepauk. Now, THAT would have been some story.

Having finished a fantastic Test series against England earlier this month, Ashwin emerged the leading wicket-taker with 28 scalps. His batting was laudable too (four half-centuries).
On the flip side, Ashwin received flak on social media for not thanking captain MS Dhoni in his acceptance speech at the ICC Awards ceremony. He later made a humble request not to tag his wife in the comments since she had "better" things to look after. Now we know what he actually meant!
The one-day international leg of England's ongoing tour kicks off on January 15, with Pune, Cuttack and Kolkata set to host the fixtures. Then the ODIs will make way for as many T20I games, the last of which will take place on February 1.
Ashwin’s first daughter Akhira was born in June last year. As of now, the cricketer is content spending quality time with his wife and daughters.
