Moeen proves England's man for the ages

London: The Oval has extracted every last drop of publicity from its 100th Test but even the famous old ground's PR department would have struggled to dream up an ending so dramatic it may be talked about 100 games hence. After an unremarkable morning, Moeen Ali bounced up to the crease as the third English bowler to be on a hat-trick in South Africa's second innings of the third Test. After a frenzied appeal, nail-biting review and final finger of doom, Moeen became the first player to achieve the feat in a Test at The Oval and the first English spinner to bag a hat-trick since Tom Goddard in 1938. The celebrations were all you might expect of such a deed. Every now and then, cricket conjures up days that span generations. Within minutes of Moeen dismissing the unfortunate Morne Morkel, who had earlier bowled superbly for South Africa for no reward, statistics started to drip feed out of computers. This was the third time Test had been completed with a hat-trick and the...

Report Card: Coach Ravi Shastri in his first 10 days with Team India

After taking charge of the team in his second stint, India coach Ravi Shastri already seems to have made an impact, though it's still early days. India vs Sri Lanka - Complete Coverage | Full Schedule Shastri's first assignment is the ongoing Sri Lanka tour and in the 10 days he has been with the team, he has already tweaked the preparation style. Under Shastri, Team India's Playing XI has got into a new practice of warming up before going down to the middle. This was evident during the opening Test in Galle itself when Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund reached the ground before the rest of the squad. The mandate for them was to get to the nets and start hitting balls just in case India bat first. With Kohli winning the toss and opting to bat, the duo was amply warmed-up and Dhawan went on to smash 190 off 168 balls in the first innings. By the time the openers went in, Cheteshwar Pujara had completed this routine, while Virat Kohli was in the nets. T...

We're more confident in our abilities now, says Kohli

Although India won by a whopping margin of 304 runs, that too within four days, they had to toil extremely hard to go 1-0 up in the three-Test series in Sri Lanka because of the resistance from the Galle International Stadium pitch that played totally out of character. India vs Sri Lanka - Complete Coverage | Full Schedule "Yes, the last time when we played here, the surface offered much more to the bowlers. It kept the bowlers in the game throughout, the quicks and the spinners more so," said Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday evening. "This time around, the wicket was really good to bat on even 'til today. I mean, if you applied yourself, you could easily score runs on that surface. So, yeah, we had to work hard to get all the wickets that we did. I think the bowlers came up with different plans, persisted with those plans long enough to get those breakthroughs and that's something that always helps at the beginning of a series." "To get a v...

India facing problem of plenty at top before second Test

India's clinical performance in thrashing Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle has left captain Virat Kohli facing a problem of plenty at the top of the batting order for the second match of the series this week. India vs Sri Lanka - Complete Coverage | Full Schedule The touring side, ranked number one in the world, defeated Sri Lanka by 304 runs inside four days to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. While Shikhar Dhawan put India in the driver's seat on the opening day with a sparkling 190 off just 168 deliveries, it was his opening partner Abhinav Mukund's turn to shine in the second innings with an 81. Dhawan and Mukund, however, were India's second-choice pairing, with Murali Vijay and KL Rahul unavailable. Dhawan only came into the squad as a replacement for the injured Vijay, while Rahul was forced to miss the first test due to a viral fever. With Rahul having recovered and ready to re-claim his spot, team management are left with a difficult choic...

Galle ton helps Kohli achieve rare feat in world cricket

Virat Kohli, who came back to form with a menacing hundred against Sri Lanka that eventually helped India register a record win at the Galle, achieved a unique feat in cricket history. Kohli's innings of 103 not out, which was his 17th Test ton, took his average in Test cricket to 50.03, making him the only player to average over fifty in all three international formats. In ODIs, Kohli has scored 8,132 runs and has slammed as many as 28 centuries and 43 fifties in 189 matches, averaging 54.68. He made his Test debut in 2011, and shrugged off the tag of "ODI specialist" by 2013 with Test hundreds in Australia and South Africa. Having reached the number one spot in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen for the first time in 2013, Kohli also found suc...

Kohli wants Hardik Pandya to be India's Ben Stokes

After registering an emphatic win against Sri Lanka in the first Test match, Indian captain Virat Kohli on Saturday heaped praises on his bowlers for delivering a 304-run victory on a wicket that "was really good to bat on". India vs Sri Lanka - Complete Coverage | Full Schedule India had declared on 240 for 3, thus putting up a massive target of 550 for the Lankan team to win. However, a splendid bowling performance by spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Aswhin, who both took three wickets each, restricted them to 245, on the final day. "The bowlers came up with different plans and persisted long enough to get those breakthroughs. And at the beginning of the series, if you get a victory like that on a surface that is not offering much, it really gives the team a confidence of doing it once more if we get the surface like that again," Kohli said. "This time around, the wicket was really good to bat on, even till today if you applied yourself, you co...

Kohli credits Dhawan, Mukund for 'clinical' win vs Sri Lanka

Galle: Following the massive 304-run win in the opening Test against Sri Lanka, India skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday heaped praise on the opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund, who weren't part of the first choice squad for the tour. Abhinav batted well and he deserved a hundred." The 28-year-old Kohli, who on Saturday fired a 136-ball unbeaten 103 to ...

Ranji Trophy back to home and away format

The BCCI will revert to the tried and tested 'home and away' Ranji Trophy format when its technical committee under the chairmanship of Sourav Ganguly meet in Kolkata on August 2. The technical committee meeting will be followed by a meeting of Tours and Fixtures Committee, which will decide on the dates of India's limited overs home series against Australia in October and November. It will be after some months that one of BCCI's sub-committees will be meeting and it has been scheduled in Kolkata as CAB president Ganguly has other commitments. The BCCI had decided on neutral venues for Ranji Trophy during the 2016-17 season after numerous complaints about home teams doctoring the pitches. However, most of the domestic captains gave it a thumbs down during the Captains Conclave in Mumbai earlier this year, when it became clear that the idea was a flop. "Most of the states have already made it clear that we should go back to the old format of at least four home ...

Talking Point: Incredible India lord over Galle

India defied ghosts of past Galle defeats as they came up with a dominating performance to take a 1-0 lead in the three match Test series against Sri Lanka on Saturday. Against a feeble home attack, spin twins R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared six wickets among themselves as India pocketed the opening Test by a massive 304 runs. Set a mammoth 550 runs to win and with two full days to go, the doors were literally closed on Sri Lanka. Finger injuries ruled out Rangana Herath and Asela Gunaratne as India needed eight wickets to start the series on a winning note. They did that in style by scripting a record away victory - highest runs margin. King Kohli slams 17th Test ton At the start of day's play, India skipper Virat Kohli required just 24 runs to reach the three figure mark. Kohli who resumed on 76 brought up his 17th Test ton and 10th as captain before setting Sri Lanka an improbable target. It was an important knock for Kohli who warmed up for the rest of the series aft...

SC seeks BCCI's reply over e-auction of IPL media rights

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Friday sought a detailed response from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over a plea seeking e-auction of media rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The auction process for IPL media rights is slated to be held from August 17 and the rights would operate for a period of five years. The three-member bench, headed by justice Dipak Misra, has given a two-week time to the BCCI to reply as to why broadcasting rights of IPL matches are not being sold through e-auctioning. On July 11, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy moved to the apex court, seeking e-auction of media rights for the matches of the lucrative T20 league. At present, Sony Pictures Network India (SPNI) is holding the rights of the IPL. However, their deal is going to an end after the event's next edition. In 2008, the Singapore-based World Sports Group bagged the IPL television rights for a 10-year period with a USD 918 million bid. It simu...

Mohammad Amir dismisses 'ridiculous' retirement rumours

"I'm fit, strong and healthy and have no intentions of quitting any format. What I had said was that as a cricketer you have to take care of your body and look after your fitness levels and someone altered that statement and quoted me as saying that I wanted to quit playing Test cricket." "It's totally untrue and as long as I am fit I want to play in all formats," he added. Amir, along with fast bowler Mohammad Asif and former skipper Salman Butt, were found guilty of various offences of corrupt behaviour r...

Out of the 12, BCCI has shortlisted five candidates whose resumes will now be sent to BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and Cricket of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai for their views. As per reports, there were just about 35 applications for the advertisement for the post. Earlier this month, the BCCI sought applications...
