Serena hits back after McEnroe says she will be ranked 700 if she plays men's circuit

Tennis legend John McEnroe has claimed that Serena Williams, who is the best player of her gender, would be ranked 700 in the men's circuit.

The seven-time major champion, speaking as part of a tour to promote his new book 'But Seriously', said that while he has great respect for Serena, he would place the 23-time Grand Slam winner "like 700 in the world" on the men's circuit.

"Best female player ever - no question."

"If she had to just play the circuit - the men's circuit - that would be an entirely different story," Sport24 quoted McEnroe as saying.

McEnroe asserted that that Williams' mental toughness would be one of the things that she would be having her way on the men's tour.

"The reality of what would happen on a given day is Serena could beat some players, I believe, because she is so incredibly strong mentally," he said.

"She could overcome some situations where players would choke because she's been in it so many times, so many situations at Wimbledon, The US Open, etc," he added.

The American became the oldest woman to win a grand slam when he won the 2015 Wimbledon title at the age of 33.

The 35-year-old tennis star has 23 grand slam singles crowns and 14 doubles titles in majors.

Swiss maestro Roger Federer, by comparison, has 18 singles Slams and none in doubles.

Meanwhile, Serena has no interest in McEnroe's thoughts on what would happen if she tried to play on the men's tennis tour.

Williams responded Monday via Twitter to comments McEnroe made during a weekend interview with NPR to promote his latest book.

Williams tells McEnroe , "I adore and respect you," but asks him to "please please keep me out of your statements that are not factually based."

In one of her tweets, Williams wrote : "I've never played anyone ranked 'there' nor do I have time."

She added: "Respect me and my privacy as I'm trying to have a baby. Good day sir."

Williams is taking a break from the tennis tour because she is pregnant. She plans to return to competition in 2018.

The American has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, a record in the Open era, which began in 1968.

McEnroe won seven major titles.

But we've seen that he's struggled lately - but more when he's been tired," Goal.com quoted Solskjaer as saying. "He wasn't on long enough to be tired so I think it might have been something that just happened there and then. "Paul is going to play when he gets his fitness. "It might be 45 minutes in the first game, it might be half an hour, it might be 90. It depends on what game he comes back in and I'm looking back to get Paul back to where I had him about a year ago," Solskjaer said. ...
