Sunrisers flex batting muscle to tame Punjab

Mohali: Ashish Nehra and Siddharth Kaul shared six wickets among themselves as Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Kings XI Punjab by 26 runs in the 33rd match of the IPL at Mohali.

Chasing 208 runs to win, Shaun Marsh smacked a brilliant 50-ball 84 but his efforts went in vain as Punjab were restricted to 181/9.

Sunrisers started their second essay brilliantly as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ashish Nehra removed the Punjab openers.

Kaul then dismissed Glenn Maxwell for a duck to leave Punjab in deep trouble. However, Shaun Marsh gave Punjab a glimpse of hope as the Australian smashed 14 boundaries and two sixes.

Marsh along with Eoin Morgan kept Hyderabad at bay but the duo had to play out of their skins to help Punjab sail home.

Rashid Khan broke the stand by removing Morgan and then Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Marsh to turn the game firmly in Hyderabad's favour.

Earlier, openers David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan helped Sunrisers post a challenging 207/3.

Right from the start, Dhawan (77) and Warner (51) thrashed Punjab's bowlers all around the park and got past 100 run mark in just 10 overs.

Both openers forged a 107-run partnership with the run-rate of 10.70 before Warner was sent packing by Punjab's skipper Glen Maxwell.

Warner tried a slog-sweep over mid-wicket but totally missed the ball and thus got bowled by Maxwell. Warner's 27-ball knock was laced with four boundaries and four sixes.

Unperturbed by the fall of Warner's wicket, Dhawan, who seemed good at the middle, continued the assault.

But after adding another 40 runs with Kane Williamson (54 not out), Dhawan was out to a Mohit Sharma delivery. Dhawan slammed nine boundaries and one six in his 48-ball inning.

Williamson along with veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh (15) then paced up the scoring rate but failed to continue their attack as both batsmen added 24 runs in three overs before Yuvraj was dismissed by Maxwell in the 17th over.

With two overs remaining, middle-order batsmen Moises Henriques and Williamson then completed the proceedings in style as they added 31 runs in two overs to post a challenging total.

For Punjab, Maxwell scalped two wickets while Mohit Sharma took one wicket.

India withdraw Smith protest as boards make peace in DRS row

India have withdrawn an official protest about the actions of Australia captain Steve Smith in the second test as the governing bodies of both countries moved to bring an end to the acrimony surrounding the ongoing four-match series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier registered a complaint to the International Cricket Council (ICC) over Smith looking to the dressing room for guidance on whether to review an lbw decision during the Bengaluru match. Despite the hosts winning the test to level the series at 1-1 on Tuesday, India skipper Virat Kohli alleged the tourists had indulged in the practice throughout the match, sparking a war of words in the media and a robust response from Australia. The boards released a joint statement on Friday saying the chief executives of both bodies had met in Mumbai on Thursday and agreed to try and bring the focus "back to the game" ahead of next week's third test in Ranchi. "India has always cherished a c...

AB de Villiers becomes top ranked batsman in ODIs

Dubai: South Africa's star batsman AB de Villiers on Friday regained the top spot in the ICC player rankings for One-Day International batsmen after leading the list of run-scorers in the recent series against New Zealand. De Villiers's 262 runs in the series, including a highest of 85 in the third ODI at Wellington, have helped him overtake Australia opener David Warner at the top of the ladder, reclaiming the top spot within two months of losing it to India captain Virat Kohli, according to the International Cricket Council's (ICC) statement. The 33-year-old batsman is on 875 points, four points ahead of Warner and 23 clear of Kohli. Among other batsmen, England's Joe Root and Alex Hales are major gainers as they have reached career-best rankings. Root has reached fourth spot after scoring 195 runs including 101 in the final match in Bridgetown against West Indies while Hales, who knocked up 110 in the same match, his fifth century in the last 20 ODIs, has gained...
