Live: England win toss, India hit back with wickets

Alastair Cook won an important toss but England could not make the most of it as the tourists slumped to 92 for four at lunch on the opening day of the third Test against India on Saturday.

Live Scorecard: IND vs ENG, Mohali Test - Day 1

Wary of batting fourth on a spinning track, Cook rather unsurprisingly asked the hosts to bowl but his top order were unable to vindicate his decision and paid the penalty for some casual shot-making at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes were batting on 20 and five respectively at the break with England, 1-0 down in the five-match series, banking on their middle order to fire and help them post a strong first innings total.

Paceman Umesh Yadav drew first blood when he got Haseeb Hameed caught for nine at gully, the young opener startled by a delivery that kicked up off a length to hit his glove and lob up to Ajinkya Rahane at gully.

Home captain Virat Kohli introduced spin in the 13th over and Jayant Yadav responded by dismissing Joe Root for 15 in his second over.

England's batting mainstay fluffed a pull shot across the line and was trapped leg-before to a perfectly innocuous delivery from the Indian off-spinner.

Cook, meanwhile, led a charmed life at the other end. The left-hander was on three when he edged Mohammed Shami but the ball whizzed past Ravindra Jadeja at third slip before the fielder could put his hands together.

On 23, Cook flicked Shami to Ravichandran Ashwin at midwicket but the fielder dropped a sitter.

Ashwin redeemed himself 10 minutes later, striking with his very first delivery which Cook edged to wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, who replaced the injured Wriddhiman Saha in the Indian squad. Cook made 27 but his dismissal came from a poor shot.

Shami finally tasted success when Kohli brought him back on, bouncing out Moeen Ali, who failed to justify his promotion to number four when he was out for 16 attempting a hook shot that he top-edged to Murali Vijay at fine leg.

London: Chelsea's Mateo Kovacic said they are a young team and need to improve a lot. Chelsea secured a 2-1 win over Hull City on Saturday in FA Cup. Michy Batshuayi scored the opening goal of the match in the sixth minute and Chelsea's second goal was scored in the 64th minute. "It was a tough game, as we knew that it would be, but we need to score in the first half two more goals. That's our problem in this moment but obviously we're happy to go through," the club's official website quoted Kovacic as saying. "It was because we didn't score on time - we had some chances and we didn't use them. In training, we are working on it but we are still a young team, a new team, and we need to improve a lot. We need to take our chances, which in this moment we are not doing great, but we have time to improve and I am sure we will do," he added.
