Big Show back on the big stage to push credentials for India

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell was disappointed not to get an Australia test recall during the recent overhaul of the squad but wants to use the one-day series against New Zealand to press his claims for next February's tour of India. Australia awarded debuts to three batsmen for the third test against South Africa at Adelaide Oval last month after losing the first two matches in the series on the back of a string of batting collapses. Although the prodigiously gifted Maxwell is better known for his all-out attack in shorter formats, he thought his recent performances had shown the sort of application that might have earned him another chance at test level. "I thought I might have been a chance," Maxwell told reporters on Thursday. "The way I batted in my first game back at the MCG against the reverse-swinging ball against Queensland, I thought that was a really good sign of the improvements I've made in my defence, technique and the way I leave the ball. "Bu...

'Uncapped' Jennings, Dawson named in England Test squad

The uncapped duo of Keaton Jennings and Liam Dawson has been named in the England Test squad for the remaining two matches against India. IND vs ENG - Complete Coverage Jennings will replace 19-year-old opener Haseeb Hameed, whose tour ended with a broken finger in Mohali Test. Dawson, on the other hand, has been called in place of his fellow left-armer Zafar Ansari, who is still recovering with the back injury he sustained in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, ESPNcricinfo reported. However, Ansari will continue to stay with the national squad and receive medical support in India before heading home on December 8. England are currently trailing 2-0 in the five-match Test series following their eight-wicket defeat in the third Test against the Virat Kohli-led side in Mohali. The two sides will play their crucial fourth match beginning on December 8 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. 'Babar Azam as good as Virat Kohli'

Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur has heaped praise on right-handed batsman Babar Azam, saying he is as good as swashbuckling Indian batsman Virat Kohli. During the recently concluded Hamilton Test against New Zealand which Pakistan lost by eight wickets, Azam scored an unbeaten 90 and Arthur says the former deserves the high praise. "He's a young gun who will be an exceptional player.I'll go so far as to say, at the same age, I reckon, he's as good as Virat Kohli, which I know that's high praise but he's right up there," the Pakistan coach was quoted as saying by Express Tribune. The 22-year-old Pakistani batsman averages 46.40 after three Tests and 52.11 in the 18 ODIs he has represented the national team till now. Azam has hit three centuries and five fifties in the ODIs whereas after the same number of matches, Kohli had only one ton and an average of 50 to his name. Pakistan had to face a 0-2 whitewash in the recently concluded series against the ...

Dhaka: Rajshahi Kings batsman Sabbir Rahman and Barisal Bulls pacer Al-Amin Hossain have been heavily penalised for breaking the code of conduct in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) tournament. Al-Amin has been fined 50 percent of his BPL contract fee and Sabbir 30 percent for off-field disciplinary breaches, according to a media statement released by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) late on Tuesday, reports bdnews24.com. But the statement did not mention what they had done. Also they were reminded of their "responsibility as national cricketers" and warned that such offences will prompt harsher punishment in the future. Sabbir's contract was worth 4 million Bangladeshi taka ($5,064) as an A plus grade player in BPL. Al-Amin, also an A grade player, was supposed to receive 2.5 million Banglad...

Kohli vaults to career best No.3 spot in ICC Test rankings

Dubai: After leading India to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match Test rubber against England, skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday vaulted to a career best third spot in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings for Test batsmen released here. The 28-year-old Kohli, who scored 62 and six not out to help India crush England by 8 wickets in the third Test against England at Mohali, moved to 833 points, within 14 points of second-ranked England's Joe Root in a list led by Australia captain Steve Smith. Starting the series in 15th position, Kohli has risen at a fast pace scoring 405 runs in the three Tests against England, according to an ICC release. Kohli, who is top-ranked in Twenty20 internationals and second in One-Day Internationals, looks determined to top the table in Tests, the only format in which he has never been top-ranked. The remaining two Tests provide more opportunity to Kohli, who had led India to victory in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Mala...

'A near perfect Test match for India despite losing toss'

It was a near perfect Test match for India despite having lost the toss. They hardly put a foot wrong. The only period of the match where they slipped a little was after tea on day two when they lost three wickets in a heap including that of skipper Virat Kohli. But thanks to their spinners who contributed with the bat, India were able to recover and also take a handy lead of 134. Then their bowlers rattled the English with pace and spin and thus ensured the India didn't have to chase too many in the fourth innings. Parthiv Patel, who is making a comeback to the Indian team, because of the injury to Wriddhiman Saha, showed that his recall was perfectly justified. He batted superbly in both innings and his glove work behind the stumps was also top class. Unfortunately, the one mistake that the umpires and wicket-keepers do is usually highlighted despite them getting everything else right. Patel's brilliant batting in both innings might actually have solved India's opening pr...

Chris Woakes diagnosed with 'tiny crack' in thumb

England pacer Chris Woakes has been diagnosed with a small crack in his right thumb sustained while batting in the second innings on Day Four of the third Test against India in Mohali which the visitors lost by eight wickets. In the second session on the fourth day, Mohammed Shami bowled two back-to-back bouncers at Woakes in the 84th over. The first bouncer got Woakes' helmet's neck guard coming off but the batsman came out unhurt. The England all-rounder was stuck on the thumb as he tried to fend off another fine short ball the very next ball. The sharp bouncer came out as a shock to Woakes who lobbed it off the handle of the bat for an easy catch for wicket keeper Parthiv Patel. The 27-year-old went for an X-ray after the game which showed what the England management are describing as a "tiny crack", reports ESPNcricinfo. This injury would only add woes to the Alastair Cook-led team, which is already lagging the five-match series by 0-2. Yesterday, the England...

None of the pitches have been turners: Kohli

Mohali: India skipper Virat Kohli on Tuesday credited the team's lower order batsmen for exerting pressure on England's bowlers after the hosts registered an eight-wicket win in the third Test at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) I.S. Bindra Stadium here. After Tuesday's win, India have now taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match Test rubber, after having won the second game at Visakhapatnam by 246 runs. Kohli, who remained unbeaten on six with opener Parthiv Patel (67 not out off 54 balls) as India overhauled the meagre target of 103 runs in just 20.2 overs, said the team is getting more confident after every win. "It was amazing to see the lower order contribute which is a proud achievement. That pushes the opposition back. (Ravichandran) Ashwin is a champion No.1 all-rounder, (Ravindra) Jadeja is in the top 10, and for Jayant (Yadav) to show the maturity in his first Tests," Kohli said in the post-match presentation. The lower order comprising t...

India hammer England to take 2-0 lead

Parthiv Patel struck a whirlwind half-century to enable India thrash England by eight wickets in the third Test at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium here on Tuesday. Patel stormed to 67 runs off 54 balls as India overhauled the 103-run target a short while after the tea break on the fourth day of the Test. Indian skipper Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on six runs at the other end. Patel hit a boundary to overhaul the target in style as India finished their second innings at 104/2. Pacer Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid bagged a wicket each for England. India now lead the five-Test series 2-0. The hosts had won the second Test in Visakhapatnam by 246 runs while the first match of the series had ended in a draw at Rajkot. India thus maintained their record of not losing a Test match at this venue for the last 22 years. The first Test hosted by this venue was in December 10-14, 1994, which saw then cricket powerhouse West Indies beat India by 243 runs. Resuming ...

Wagner runs through Pakistan tail, NZ clinch Test series

Image Courtesy: @BLACKCAPS Neil Wagner ripped through Pakistan's tail with three wickets in six deliveries to help New Zealand dismiss the visitors for 230 and secure a 138-run victory on the final day of the second Test at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Tuesday. Full Scorecard: NZ vs PAK, 2nd Test The victory also wrapped up the series 2-0 for Kane Williamson's side, their first series victory over Pakistan since 1985, after they won the first match by eight wickets in Christchurch. "We were under pressure, they're a very strong side and are not number two in the world for no reason," Williamson said in a televised interview. "They showed that today, but we were able to stick at it and get the result." The fifth day had meandered along for the first two sessions as Pakistan openers Azhar Ali and Sami Aslam looked to give themselves a base from which to challenge the 369-run target. The pair put on 131 for the first wicket before stand-in captain Azhar...

Pandya set to be sidelined for six weeks with shoulder injury

In what may come as a major blow to India, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to be sidelined for at least six weeks after suffering a hairline fracture on his right shoulder. The 23-year-old was struck by a ball during a net session before the start of the ongoing third Test match against England in Mohali and was subsequently released from the side to consult a specialist. "He will take minimum six weeks to recover from this injury. BCCI medical team will monitor his progress and rehabilitation programme and update accordingly," a BCCI statement confirmed. Earlier, Pandya was picked in the Test squad as a replacement for injured Rohit Sharma for the first time after impressing the national selectors in the limited-over formats. Meanwhile, batsman KL Rahul was earlier also released from the squad to recover from his left forearm injury. He is expected to regain his fitness for the fourth Test match of the ongoing five-match series against England to be held in Mumbai from ...

Roger Federer to make injury return in IPTL

Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who suffered from a knee injury in July, will make his return in Asia next month after his participation was confirmed in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL). In July, Federer ruled himself out of the rest of the season to recover fully from his injury, which got aggravated during his semifinal defeat to Milos Raonic in Wimbledon. However, since the Spanish maestro has turned 35, there are question marks over how long he will continue to compete. Federer will prepare for January's Hopman Cup by representing the Indian Aces in the IPTL, reported Sport24. IPTL, which is seen as tennis's answer to cricket's T20 format, takes place in Japan, Singapore and India between December 2 and 11, with the Swiss Maestro being the most high-profile men's player taking part in the event. The 17-time Grand Slam champion would be joined in the Indian Aces line-up by players like Feliciano Lopez and Eugenie Bouchard. Stay ...

'England left praying for a miracle'

Ravindra Jadeja led India's strong lower-order batting display with a career-best 90 before spin partner Ravichandran Ashwin wrecked England's top order to put the hosts firmly in charge of the third test on Monday. Look at how experts penned down their thoughts on England's debacle. ------------------------------------------------ Disastrous day for England hands India the series initiative in third Test Vic Marks, The Guardian Another day of drip-drip torment for England in the Punjab and their chief torturer was Ravi Ashwin, India’s prime all-rounder – and in these parts regarded as the world’s best all-rounder. Currently it is hard to argue with that. Ashwin has been a rock for India when holding a bat in this series, often making amends for the frailties of one or two up the order: 58, 70 and 72 have been his first innings scores, runs always compiled when the home side has been wavering. But currently it is his bowling that is haunting English batsmen from Alasta...

'Sword celebration' is my trademark style: Jadeja

Image Courtesy: BCCI Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja on Monday yet again got the opportunity to perform his traditional celebration of bat brandishing during his career-best knock of 90 runs during the ongoing third Test of the five-match series against England at the Punjab Cricket Stadium (PCA) in Mohali. IND vs ENG - Complete Coverage Jadeja reached his 3rd Test fifty against England in the first innings and after reaching the milestone, the left-hander brought out his trademark sword celebration out, twirling his bat vigorously in the direction of the dressing room with a smile on his face. However, he confirmed that being a Rajput, it is his trademark to enjoy success by swinging a bat, because he cannot use a sword on field. "My celebration style is a trademark of a Rajput. And I follow that only. There is nothing new in it. Being a Rajput, it is my trademark to enjoy success by swinging a bat, of course I can't use sword on field," Jadeja told reports after...

Lower order's contribution a bonus for team: Jadeja

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja on Monday hailed India's lower order contribution in Test matches, saying it's always a "bonus" for the team whenever the lower order performs with the bat. IND vs ENG - Complete Coverage India's lower order contribution is the highest among all the teams this year in Test matches. In the ongoing Test also being played at the Punjab Cricket Stadium (PCA) in Mohali against England, the Indian lower order contributed more than 200 runs and eventually helped the hosts to tighten the grip on the game. Speaking to reporters after the third day's play, Jadeja said, "It's a good sign that the lower order is performing and contributing its best towards the team. It's a good sign that apart from the top order, the lower order is also performing. We are focusing more during the nets on our batting. Ravichandran Ashwin has scored more than 500 runs in 2016. I also try to contribute whatever I can. As I said whatever batsmen from...

Ashwin, Jadeja leave England in tatters

Mohali: India took four crucial England wickets in second innings to put themselves in a commanding position after third day's play of the ongoing third Test of the five-match series at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium on Monday. At stumps on Day Four, the visitors were left in tatters at 78-4, and are still trailing by 56 runs. The day belonged to Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jayant Yadav. The spin trio did not only bowl brilliantly to put England in deep trouble, they also contributed handsomely with the bat to help India take a lead of 134 runs in the first innings. Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 271-6, Ashwin and Jadeja, which had shared an unbeaten partnership of 67 on Day Three, added another 30 runs before Ashwin got out at his individual score of 72. However, Jadeja found an able partner in Jayant (55) and the duo added 80 runs to consolidate India's lead. Jadeja got out 10 short of his maiden Test hundred in trying to score quic...

Gavaskar disappointed by Kohli's send-off to Stokes

Image Courtesy: BCCI Expressing his displeasure over Virat Kohli's behaviour, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the Indian skipper for engaging in war of words with Ben Stokes after the England all-rounder's dismissal on Day One of the ongoing third Test in Mohali. IND vs ENG - Complete Coverage The incident took place during the 44th over in the post lunch session on the opening day when Stokes, who had played the spinners well till that point, was foxed by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and stumped by Parthiv Patel. Following his dismissal, the TV replays showed Virat giving Stokes, who himself is a character with a short fuse at the best of times, a send-off. The England all-rounder then stopped on his way to the pavilion and offered a retort of a similarly crude nature before on-field umpire Marais Erasmus had to intervene. Insisting that there was no need of giving a send off, Gavaskar said Kohli should instead have appreciated his team-mates and Parth...

Live: Jadeja misses ton as India take 134-run lead

Ravindra Jadeja fell agonisingly short of his maiden Test century but India's strong lower-order batting display gave the hosts a healthy advantage midway through the third Test against England on Monday. Live Scorecard - Mohali Test, Day 3 Jadeja made a fluent 90 and forged two 75-plus partnerships with Ravichandran Ashwin and Jayant Yadav before India were bowled out for 417, a handy first innings lead of 134 runs, prompting an early tea on the third day of the match. Resuming on 271-6, the Indians needed four overs to erase the 12-run first innings deficit at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. Ben Stokes, who came up with a lion-hearted effort with the ball to claim 5-73, earned a breakthrough when he dismissed Ashwin for 72, a composed knock including 11 boundaries. The Ashwin-Jadeja stand was worth a match-high 97 runs and India will expect the spinning all-rounders to forge a similar partnership with the ball in England's second innings. Jadeja went on to comple...

India haven't lost art of leaving: Pujara

Two of his team mates, including skipper Virat Kohli, perished playing away from their body but Indian top order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara dismissed suggestions that the team have any technical issues with leaving balls outside off-stump. Opener Murali Vijay hung out his bat to a wide Ben Stokes delivery to be dismissed caught behind on day of the third test on Sunday. Later in the day, Kohli, who otherwise showed tremendous restraint when England attacked him with a strong off-side field, was sucked into edging the same bowler for a similar dismissal at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. "Everyone has their own gameplan. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the way we batted," said Pujara, himself adept at the art of leaving, the decline of which coincided with the mushrooming Twenty20 leagues. "Not particularly in this test match, but in the past also we have left balls well outside the off-stump," said the number three batsman who contributed 51 in ...

Adil Rashid belongs in Test cricket: Michael Vaughan

Half-centuries by Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin kept India on course for a first innings lead after England made a spirited comeback on day two of the third test on Sunday. Having bowled out England for 283 earlier in the morning, India looked in charge at 148-2 at tea before Adil Rashid's double strike jolted the hosts who lost three wickets in 19 balls to slump to 156-5. Ashwin enhanced his new-found batting reputation with an unbeaten 57 while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was batting on 31 at stumps with India trailing by 12 runs. A look at how the experts summed up the day's play. ------------------ Adil Rashid belongs in Test cricket Michael Vaughan, BBC England leg-spinner Adil Rashid has realised he "belongs" in Test cricket, says former captain Michael Vaughan. Rashid took three wickets on the second day of the third Test against India to take his tally for the series to 16, more than any other bowler. "He's found that ...

England bowled 'negative lines': Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara, one of India's batting mainstays, on Sunday accused the England team of resorting to negative tactics and bowling on "negative lines" on Day 2 of the ongoing third Test here at the PCA Stadium. IND vs ENG - Complete Coverage After bowling out England for 283 and thereby reaching 60 for one at lunch, India could only manage to score 88 runs in the second session of the day. England had held the scoring rate in check and didn't allow the Indian batters to score fluently. Pujara, when asked about that passage of play in the match conference after the day's play, said, "I think we were not struggling. The lines which England were bowling were I felt a little negative. But I still feel that the way we batted and the way we showed character was good, we were leaving the balls outside the off stump and we build a partnership which was needed by the team." "I think the second session was good for us. I don't think England had the ...

England bowled exceptionally well, says leg-spinner Rashid

Mohali: England's leg-spinner Adil Rashid lauded the bowlers for maintaining a good line and length to put the visitors back in contention in the third Test against India here on Sunday. India posted 271/6 in their first innings, trailing England by 12 runs at the end of the second day's play with Ravichandran Ashwin (57 batting) and Ravindra Jadeja (31 batting) at the crease. Rashid (3/81) struck in only the second over after tea as the well set Chestehwar Pujara (51) was caught by Chris Woakes on the leg-side. He had earlier claimed opener Parthiv Patel's (42) wicket. The leg-spinner again struck in his very next over, trapping Ajinkya Rahane (0) leg before. Rahane, who lasted all of six balls, was outfoxed by the spin as the ball hit front pad, plumb in front of the wicket. Rashid's guile gave England a fighting chance to bowl India out cheaply in the first innings. "We bowled exceptionally well. It was a good effort with the ball and in the field. It was ...

India have advantage as Ashwin, Jadeja are still there: Pujara

Mohali: England may have claimed several crucial wickets in the post-tea session, but Cheteshwar Pujara still feels that India have the advantage at the end of the second day of the third Test here on Sunday. IND vs ENG - Complete Coverage India were sailing along in their first innings, posting 148/2 by tea with Pujara and Indian skipper Virat Kohli batting comfortably to post a 75-run partnership. But the visitors hit back in the final session of the day, clinching four wickets before the hosts rode on some aggressive batting by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to post 271/6 at stumps. England's first innings had ended on 283 runs early in the morning session. With Ashwin completing his half-century and Jadeja also seemingly in good form, Pujara asserted that the Indians were well poised to clinch a decisive advantage on the third day. "We have batted really well and we have an advantage because both our all-rounders are playing. So, probably the first session ...

Indo-Pak ties to be discussed in December meeting

Karachi: Cricket authorities of India and Pakistan are set to meet on December 17 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for discussions on the future of holding bilateral series in the backdrop of the sterile relations between the two neighbours. According to a report in the Express Tribune on Sunday, the Indian authorities have already suggested different options, including the option of a triangular series, but Pakistan have not shown any interest. A meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is scheduled in Colombo next month which will be held under the stewardship of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan. PCB officials Najam Sethi and Subhan Ahmed are also expected to attend the meeting, as per the report. PCB has reportedly decided to take up with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Anurag Thakur the issue of bilateral matches. In case they do not receive a positive response there, legal options will be considered, the report said. According to some reports...

India set for first innings lead after England fightback

Mohali: Ravichandran Ashwin on Sunday proved once again why he is the No. 1 Test all-rounder as he came to rescue of struggling Indian team and helped them to come out of hot waters on second day of the third Test against England here at the PCA Stadium. At stumps on Day 2, India were 271-6 with Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja still at the crease on 57 and 31 respectively. Both the batsmen have added 67 runs in under 20 overs and thereby helped the team to reduce the first innings' deficit to just 12 runs. Earlier, resuming the day at 268-8, the visitors could add just 15 runs to their tally and eventually got bowled out at 283. Johnny Bairstow and Jos Butler were the star performers for the England as they scored 89 and 43 respectively in the first inning. India did not have a good first inning start as they lost inform Murali Vijay (12) with 39 runs on the scoreboard. Parthiv Patel, who returned to the national team in Tests after eight years, led India's first innings reply ...

India release injured Pandya, Rahul from Test squad

Mohali: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced that injured Hardik Pandya and K.L. Rahul have been released from the Test squad currently playing England. Pandya, who sustained a blow on his right shoulder during team's training session in the ongoing third Test here, was picked for the first time in Tests. But he didn't play in any of the three Tests so far against England. Rahul played the second match at Visakhapatnam in which he got injured. India won the second match to lead the five-match series 1-0. "BCCI medical team confirms that India all-rounder Hardik Pandya sustained a blow on his right shoulder during a training session in Mohali. He has been released from the Indian Test team and will consult a specialist to decide the future course of action," the BCCI said in a statement. Australia stop rot with convincing victory

Australia cruised to a seven-wicket consolation victory in the day-night third test on Sunday after dismissing South Africa for 250 and knocking off the 127 runs for victory for the loss of three wickets before dinner on day four. There was a minor scare when, with 63 runs still required, Dave Warner was run-out for 47 and Usman Khawaja dismissed for a duck inside one over but there was never any real doubt that Australia would avoid a first ever 3-0 sweep on home soil. Opener Matt Renshaw, one of three new caps brought into the Australia side after heavy defeats in the first two tests, scored 34 not out and brought the hosts level after his captain Steve Smith was dismissed for 40 with only two runs required. It was left to another debutant, Peter Handscomb, to score the winning run with a single to midwicket. It was Australia's second pink ball victory after they beat New Zealand in the inaugural day-night test in Adelaide last year but more importantly ended a run of five def...

Gavaskar heaps praise on captain Kohli

There were a couple of Test matches played last week. The Australians, having been beaten by the South Africans in both the Tests, were scarpering and looking for some excuses for their defeat. As always their extended support staff, their media, came to their rescue with the allegation against Faf du Plessis about ball tampering. Faf du Plessis was seen on TV applying saliva on the ball after having first put his finger in the mouth which had a lolly. So. Aha! that was the reason why the Australian batsmen couldn’t cope with the South African bowlers. It had nothing to do with fine bowling by the South Africans but all to do because the ball was tampered with by the Proteas’ skipper. Many times when a player is pulled up and asked to appear for a hearing by the match referee he pleads guilty because that's the easy way out. He will be fined and to today’s cricketers earning the big bucks in various leagues, a fine doesn’t hurt at all. So they are out of the hearing in a matter o...

Stokes reprimanded for inappropriate comments at Kohli's boys

Image Courtesy: BCCI England all rounder Ben Stokes on Saturday has received an official reprimand for breaching Level one of the ICC Code of Conduct during the opening day's play in the third Test against India in Mohali. Stokes was found to have breached Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match". In addition to the reprimand for his breach of Article 2.1.4, one demerit point has been added to Stokes's disciplinary record. "Pursuant to Article 7.6 of the Code, if Stokes reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they will be converted into suspension points and he will be banned. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player," ICC said in a statement. The incident happened when Stokes reacted to India players...

I am getting better day by day: Umesh Yadav

Mohali: Indian pacer Umesh Yadav, who came out with another impressive performance on the opening day of the third Test against England, believes he is getting better and better with each passing day. After England won the toss and decided to bat on a slow pitch here at the PCA Stadium, India proved their decision wrong by picking up four quick wickets in the first session on Saturday. A watchful start from 19-year-old Haseeb Hameed was interrupted by a good length ball from Yadav that climbed steeply on the teenager, struck his glove and looped up neatly for Ajinkya Rahane to catch at gully. The 29-year-old pacer, who was impressive with his ball movement early morning, returned late in the day to pick the wicket of Chris Woakes in the penultimate over of the day. "I believe that I am improving day by day as I am playing more and more matches. I have been talking to my coaches and take advices who tell me that I have to bowl in my areas of strength," Yadav said in a post...

India restrict England to 268/8 at stumps on Day 1

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow (89) saved England's blushes as the visitors reached 268/8 at stumps on the opening day of the third Test against India at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) I.S. Bindra Stadium here on Saturday. At stumps, tailenders Abdul Rashid (4) and Gareth Batty (0) were at the crease. Bairstow fell 11 short of what could have been his fourth Test century when off-spinner Jayant Yadav trapped him in front just before the day's play ended. His 177-ball knock included six boundaries. Despite losing his partners at the other end, Bairstow played the sheet anchor's role well to bring up his half-century in 76 balls. Coming together at the fall of Moeen Ali (16), Bairstow forged a 57-run stand with Ben Stokes (29) before being separated by left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja after the lunch break. Australia take control in Adelaide

Australia took firm control of the day-night third test on Saturday when they reduced South Africa to 194 for six at the close on day three, only 70 runs ahead of their hosts. Desperate for a consolation victory to avoid a first 3-0 series sweep on home soil, Australia's tail boosted their first- innings tally to 383 before the bowlers took over. Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla departed before tea and JP Duminy, captain Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma and Kyle Abbott followed under the lights in the night session. Opener Stephen Cook was the one top-order batsman left standing after hitting 81 off 199 balls and will return to the crease on day four with Quinton de Kock, who had yet to score. Paceman Mitchell Starc, who earlier completed his seventh test half century, removed Elgar for a duck with the fifth ball of the innings before taking the key wicket of Du Plessis for 12 courtesy of a brilliant catch by Peter Handscomb. The home side celebrated with the debutant as if they had won ...

I'm really hungry in terms of how much I want to achieve as a cricketer: Ashwin

For those who feared for the future of finger-spin bowling, Ravichandran Ashwin's stupendous success over the last 16 months has come as a mighty relief. While the art of off-spin has grappled with the menace of chucking, the 30-year-old Indian has risen to the top of the ICC test bowling rankings on the back of seven Man of the Series performances. Apart from skipper Virat Kohli, nobody is more important to India's Test success on home soil and on Saturday he will unpack his bag of tricks in Mohali as the hosts attempt to lock up the five-Test series against England. All this success has come against the background of the International Cricket Council's 2014 declaration of war on off-spinners with illegal actions. Numerous bowlers required remedial work to get back to permissible limits of bend in their elbows and the crackdown wrecked the career of Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal, one of the world's leading spinners in the post-Muttiah Muralitharan era. Ashwin, though,...

Australia were dismissed for 383, a first innings lead of 124, to bring up tea on the third day of the day-night third Test against South Africa on Saturday. Live Scorecard - Day/Night Test, Adelaide Usman Khawaja departed for 145 after half an hour's play and Mitchell Starc (53) secured his seventh Test half century before South Africa's bowlers ran through the tail. Australia resumed on 307 for six, having had their best day of batting in the series on Friday. Khawaja had added just seven runs to his overnight 138 before his 466-minute innings was brought to a close when he was trapped leg before by Vernon Philander, a decision confirmed by the third umpire on review. His erstwhile partner Starc continued to defy the Proteas bowlers and hit a straight four off Tabraiz Shamsi to bring up his 50 before chipping the ball straight back at Kagiso Rabada to depart caught and bowled immediately after drinks. Nathan Lyon was next to depart after scoring 13 off eight balls, his a...

Live: England win toss, India hit back with wickets

Alastair Cook won an important toss but England could not make the most of it as the tourists slumped to 92 for four at lunch on the opening day of the third Test against India on Saturday. Live Scorecard: IND vs ENG, Mohali Test - Day 1 Wary of batting fourth on a spinning track, Cook rather unsurprisingly asked the hosts to bowl but his top order were unable to vindicate his decision and paid the penalty for some casual shot-making at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes were batting on 20 and five respectively at the break with England, 1-0 down in the five-match series, banking on their middle order to fire and help them post a strong first innings total. Paceman Umesh Yadav drew first blood when he got Haseeb Hameed caught for nine at gully, the young opener startled by a delivery that kicked up off a length to hit his glove and lob up to Ajinkya Rahane at gully. Home captain Virat Kohli introduced spin in the 13th over and Jayant Yadav respond...
