Ryu returns from DL, pitches Dodgers to 7-1 win

Hyun-Jin Ryu came off the disabled list to pitch four-hit ball over seven innings, and Matt Kemp singled in the go-ahead run to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 7-1 Sunday and avoid a three-game sweep. Ryu (14-6) struck out seven and walked none while allowing one run in his first start since a loss at Atlanta on Aug. 13, when he hurt his right hip. Ryu improved to 4-0 lifetime against the Padres. The seven runs were one more than the Dodgers scored in their previous three games combined. They lost by one run in extra innings in the first two games of the series. Adrian Gonzalez had four hits. He also scored the first of the Dodgers' four runs in the eighth against three relievers. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1r0AicG

Ferrer out in first big upset among men at US Open

Gilles Simon felt cheated by the weatherman. Instead of the cool day he was expecting, he faced the prospect of playing a top player who had dominated him in the past on one of the hottest, muggiest days of the U.S. Open so far. In the end, the skinny Frenchman overcame both, beating fourth-seeded David Ferrer 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 to pull off the biggest upset to hit the men's draw yet. Ferrer was the first of the top 10 seeds to go down, and nobody was more surprised than the 26th-seeded Simon. "I was not really prepared," he said with a smile, "because everyone was talking about the cooler day with maybe some rain. "It was really, really difficult to play. It was hot and it was so humid. I never sweat like this in the last 10 years." Simon, who was ranked as high as No. 6 in 2009 and cracked the top 20 earlier this year, came into the match with a 1-5 record against Ferrer, and most of those losses weren't even close. Simon said that actually helped him...

Bad weather shuts down concerts, delays flights

Severe thunderstorms across the Northeast on Sunday slowed operations at airports, wreaked havoc at outdoor sporting and musical events and sent people scurrying from a beach after three men were struck by lightning. The men were injured at Orchard Beach on Pelham Bay in the Bronx on Sunday evening as bad storms rolled through the area, the Fire Department of New York said. The men were being treated at a hospital, and the extent of their injuries was unknown. Torrential rain, thunder and lightning interrupted Labor Day weekend celebrations in Philadelphia, where a parkway hosting a music concert was evacuated for safety reasons. Organizers of the Made in America festival warned people to move quickly and calmly to the exits and to protected areas outside the downtown festival site. The bad weather also forced the early end to the Electric Zoo musical festival on an island in New York's East River and halted play at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Queens. AP source: Chiefs' Smith agrees to 4-yr extension

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has agreed to a four-year, $68 million extension that includes $45 million in guaranteed money, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because the team had not announced the deal, which will keep Smith in Kansas City through the 2018 season. The Kansas City Star first reported the agreement. Smith and his representatives had been discussing an extension with the Chiefs for several months, and the veteran quarterback was hopeful a deal would be done before the regular season. Turns out it was completed one day before the Chiefs were scheduled to have their first practice for their season opener Sunday against Tennessee. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://ift.tt/1jmc4og via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1vZdlaD

Angels trounce A's 8-1 to complete 4-game sweep

Mike Trout hit his career-high 31st homer and drove in three runs, Matt Shoemaker pitched seven shutout innings of five-hit ball, and the Los Angeles Angels completed a masterful four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with an 8-1 victory Sunday. The Angels won their sixth in row and own the best record in the majors at 83-53. They shut out the A's for the 29 consecutive innings while opening a five-game lead atop the AL West heading into September. Trout had a two-run single during a six-run second inning. Chris Iannetta homered and had three hits for Los Angeles, which has won 15 of 19. The A's have lost 14 of 20. Scott Kazmir (14-7) got just four outs for Oakland, which scored its first run since Thursday on Josh Reddick's RBI single off Mike Morin in the eighth. The sellout crowd loudly chanted "Sweep! Sweep!" as the club finished off its most impressive weekend of a remarkable season. The weekend was awful for the A's, who got slugger Adam Dunn from the ...

Force, a 16-time Funny Car world champ, earned $100,000 when he beat teammate Robert Hight with a 4.061-second run at 317.19 mph in a Ford Mustang. He defeated fan vote/lottery winner Tim Wilkerson and two-time season winner Alexis DeJoria to reach the final. It was Force's second Traxxas Shootout win and seventh career victory in an NHRA all-star race. 3 injured in lightning strike at New York beach

A lightning strike at a New York City beach has injured three people. The fire department says the men were injured at Orchard Beach on Pelham Bay in the Bronx on Sunday evening as bad storms rolled through the area. The men are being treated at a hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown. The lightning strike happened as heavy thunderstorms swept through the city. Torrential rain, thunder and lightning interrupted Labor Day weekend celebrations, halted play at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Queens and forced the early end to a musical festival on an East River island. Dozens of commercial flights into the city's airports were delayed because of the severe weather. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1phCCXN

RG3 statue, boats on water at Baylor's new stadium

Robert Griffin III will always have a special place in Baylor football lore. The school's only Heisman Trophy winner now has a permanent place in bronze at the Bears' new stadium. A 9½-foot bronze statue of Griffin was unveiled Sunday before the Bears played SMU in their first game at McLane Stadium. The statue is in a plaza between the stadium and the Brazos River, where some fans arrived by boat for the game. Griffin says he never dreamed of having a statue honoring his name. The Washington Redskins quarterback won the Heisman Trophy in 2011, the same year the Bears won 10 games for the first time since their outright 1980 Southwest Conference title. The Bears are now playing on the Waco campus for the first time since 1935. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1r0ohUT

Cardinals overcome 5-run deficit to beat Cubs 9-6

Matt Holliday hit his third home run in two games and broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run single, rallying the St. Louis Cardinals past the Chicago Cubs 9-6 on Sunday. Holliday had three hits and four RBIs for the Cardinals, who began the day one game behind first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central. St. Louis second baseman Kolten Wong homered but left in the top of the eighth after falling backward when he tried to catch a popup in short right field. He appeared to hurt his head and shoulder, and was replaced by Pete Kozma. Kozma, in his third stint with St. Louis this season, led off the bottom half with a double. It was his second hit in four at-bats this year. After failing to get down two bunt attempts, Daniel Descalso got the third one down and beat Carlos Villanueva's throw to first for a single. With the bases loaded and two outs, Holliday singled off the foot of Villanueva (5-7) to drive in two runs. Jhonny Peralta's third single scored the final run in the three-...

Dominguez, Altuve team up, lead Astros over Texas

Matt Dominguez hit a tying homer and Jose Altuve's fourth hit drove in the go-ahead run as the Houston Astros rallied in the eighth inning to beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Sunday. Dominguez connected off reliever Neal Cotts (2-8) with one out in the eighth to make it 2-all. One out, one pitching change and three batters later, Altuve singled home Jake Marisnick. Altuve also doubled twice in matching his career high for hits. Dominguez had an RBI single earlier in the game. The Astros won a series for the first time since Aug. 19-21 at Yankee Stadium. Jose Veras (3-1) got the win and Chad Qualls posted his 16th save. Dallas Keuchel went seven innings for the Astros, allowing two runs and five hits. He struck out three and walked two. Alex Rios doubled and singled Texas, driving in a run and scoring run. His RBI single in the sixth, a grounder that got between second and short, scored Daniel Robertson to put Texas ahead 2-1. Wozniacki outlasts Sharapova, in US Open quarters

Caroline Wozniacki trusts her stamina so much that she plans to return to New York in two months to run a marathon. Maria Sharapova, usually the one wearing down opponents in the third set, sure couldn't keep up on a steamy Sunday at the U.S. Open. Wozniacki won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in 2 hours, 37 minutes to get back to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in more than two years — and get back in the headlines for reasons other than her personal life. "The season for me has been a little bit up and down," she said in quite an understatement, "and it's so nice to kind of start feeling like I'm playing the way I want to." Because of the heat, the players received a 10-minute break before the final set; Sharapova returned to the court late, arguing with the chair umpire after receiving a time violation warning. Perhaps sensing that she was fresher than the five-time major champion, Wozniacki later complained that Sharapova was dawdling between points. Her tardiness s...

Moore rallies Lynx past Mercury 82-77

Maya Moore scored 13 of her 32 points in the fourth quarter and the Minnesota Lynx avoided elimination by beating the Phoenix Mercury 82-77 in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals on Sunday. Diana Taurasi scored 23 for the Mercury, who will host Game 3 on Tuesday night. The Lynx are three-time defending Western Conference champions. Tied at 75 with 23.3 seconds left, Seimone Augustus hit a 15-foot jumper and was fouled by DeWanna Bonner. Augustus, who finished with 23 points, converted the three-point play, and after Candice Dupree missed a 15-footer on the other end, Moore hit two free throws to put it out of reach for Minnesota. The Lynx went on a 13-0 run early in the fourth quarter to take their first lead since they scored the first point of the game. Augustus scored off a feed from Moore to put Minnesota on top 66-65 with 6:19 to play. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1u47gcw

US OPEN SCENE: Rain comes too late for Sharapova

The rain came too late for Maria Sharapova. Bounced from the U.S. Open just before a downpour Sunday, Sharapova faced reporters for a news conference that kept getting interrupted by screeching weather warnings going off on reporters' cellphones. "Is that the flood warning?" Sharapova asked. "Darn it. If I was only there a little longer," she said to laughter. The fifth-seeded Sharapova didn't get a break because of the weather in her 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 loss to 10th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki but other players did. The heavy rain and lightning forced the first suspension of play so far in the tournament. — By James Martinez, http://ift.tt/1Ch3zoL ___ U.S. Open Scene follows tennis' hard-court Grand Slam tournament in New York as seen by journalists from The Associated Press. Russell Henley made five birdies in a seven-hole stretch Sunday and had a 6-under 65 to take a one-shot lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship. For the second straight week, a FedEx Cup playoff event is wide open going into the final round. This one includes Rory McIlroy. The world's No. 1 player had a 64. Down at half, US beats Turkey in basketball worlds

Kenneth Faried scored 22 points, Anthony Davis all of his 19 in the second half, and the U.S. rebounded from a rare deficit at halftime to beat Turkey 98-77 on Sunday in the Basketball World Cup. A night after beating Finland by 59 in its biggest rout ever while using NBA players in the former world championship, the Americans couldn't take control against Turkey until early in the fourth quarter. They trailed 40-35 at halftime and Turkey led by six early in the third before the Americans could finally get the game into the quicker tempo they prefer and pull away to win the rematch of the 2010 gold-medal game in Istanbul. But it was a much tougher one than expected after the Americans hammered Finland 114-55 while Turkey was being outplayed for most of its opener by New Zealand before pulling out the victory. James Harden added 14 points for the U.S. It was tied at 59 with 3:10 left in the third before the Americans closed the period with a 7-1 burst to lead 66-60 after Faried'...

Showboat closes after 27 years in Atlantic City

The show is over for the Showboat Casino Hotel. The Mardi Gras-themed casino shut down Sunday after 27 years on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. It was one of three casinos closing within the next two weeks as Atlantic City deals with the impact of increasing competition from casinos in neighboring states. Revel will begin a two-day closing Monday, and Trump Plaza is closing Sept. 16. One of the final songs piped in over the Showboat's loudspeakers: Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust." "We're all feeling a little betrayed," Showboat cook Curtis Wade said. "We're all walking around in a fog today. We worked really hard to try to keep it operating, and we're still profitable. We still don't understand why we were the one targeted to close, and nobody has given us an answer on that. There are too many jobs being pushed out of Atlantic City due to corporate greed." Wade will be among the thousands of workers showing up at the Atlantic City...

Wozniacki outlasts Sharapova at US Open

Caroline Wozniacki trusts her stamina so much that she plans to return to New York in two months to run a marathon. Maria Sharapova, usually the one wearing down opponents in the third set, sure couldn't keep up on a steamy Sunday at the U.S. Open. Wozniacki won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in 2 hours, 37 minutes to get back to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in more than two years — and get back in the headlines for reasons other than her personal life. "It's been an up and down year for me," Wozniacki said in quite the understatement. With the fifth-seeded Sharapova's loss, No. 1 Serena Williams is the only woman left in the top six. Because of the heat, the players were given a 10-minute break before the final set; Sharapova returned to the court late, arguing with the chair umpire after receiving a time violation warning. Sensing that she was fresher than the five-time major champion, Wozniacki later complained that Sharapova was dawdling between points. Her tardiness seem...

Heisey hits 2 HRs, leads Cueto, Reds over Pirates

Chris Heisey hit two home runs, including a tiebreaking shot in the ninth inning, and Johnny Cueto overcame an early jolt to earn his 16th win as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Sunday. Heisey's solo drive with one out in the ninth off Jared Hughes (6-5) helped the Reds avoid getting swept at PNC Park. Heisey began the day with just five homers in 229 at-bats this year. Cueto (16-8) gave up a home run to Josh Harrison on his first pitch of the game. Jordy Mercer homered off Cueto in the second for a 2-0 lead. Cueto wound up pitching eight innings and tied Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw for the major league lead in victories. Cueto worked around nine hits, striking out six and walking one. Aroldis Chapman struck two in a perfect ninth for his 29th save. Heisey tied at 2 in the fifth, connecting after Ryan Ludwick drew a leadoff walk from Francisco Liriano. Liriano cruised through his first four innings, throwing an efficient 43 pitches before he ran into trouble in ...

Recker hits 3-run HR, Mets hold off Phillies 6-5

Anthony Recker snapped a sixth-inning tie with a three-run homer in a rare start, and the New York Mets held off the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 Sunday to avoid dropping into last place. Wilmer Flores had three hits and made two sparkling defensive plays at shortstop in the final two innings to help New York hang on. By taking two of three in the weekend series, the Mets kept Philadelphia in the NL East cellar. Dillon Gee pitched effectively into the seventh inning, and New York finished 13-6 against the Phillies this season. Recker, who had not played since Aug. 19 in Oakland, lined the first pitch he saw from A.J. Burnett in the sixth into the left-field seats to give the Mets a 5-2 lead. The home run was only his third hit since the All-Star break. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/VZ9nly

Sam clears waivers, meets with Fisher

Michael Sam showed up for his face-to-face exit meeting with St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher, a few hours after clearing waivers. Sam arrived at Rams Park via through the media entrance Sunday afternoon still looking right at home clad in a T-shirt, shorts and flip flops. He shook hands with two reporters and accepted well wishes but declined further comment before heading upstairs to see the coach who wasn't afraid to add the first openly gay player to the roster. All 21 players released Saturday cleared waivers. Sam's future was a major topic on Twitter, some of it vitriol, some reasoned. The Rams appeared unlikely to re-sign Sam to the 10-player practice squad because the defensive line is their strongest unit and they need help elsewhere. The meeting with Sam meeting was postponed a day so he could attend Missouri's opening victory over South Dakota State. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://ift.tt/1jmc4og via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1wXFyCJ

Buchholz throws 3-hitter, Red Sox beat Rays 3-0

, Fla. (AP) — Clay Buchholz threw a three-hitter to stop his string of seven starts without a win, leading the Boston Red Sox over the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Sunday. Buchholz (6-8) walked none and struck out six. Only one runner reached second base during his second shutout this season and sixth of his career. The right-hander's previous win came over Kansas City on July 18, five days after tossing a three-hitter in an 11-0 win against Houston. He was 0-3 in that span. Alex Cobb (9-7) had been 7-0 in his past 11 starts. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1wXFwuH

Dunn dealt to A's, could be his last shot playoffs

One more shot at the playoffs for Adam Dunn before he says he's probably done. The slugger with 460 career home runs but zero at-bats in the postseason was traded by the Chicago White Sox to Oakland on Sunday, possibly giving the contending A's the power boost they need for the stretch. The White Sox also sent cash to Oakland while acquiring minor league pitcher Nolan Sanburn. Because the deal was made before Sept. 1, Dunn will be eligible for the postseason if the suddenly sluggish Athletics make the playoffs. The 34-year-old Dunn has played more games — 1,976 — without reaching the postseason than any active major leaguer. This is his 14th season and, with a contract set to expire, said he's planning to retire after this year. Dunn waived his no-trade clause and approved the deal. "This is probably going to be it," he said. "I think that also weighed a lot, too. This is an opportunity. I've been playing a long time and haven't got this opportunity, ...

Neymar, Messi set up winner for Barcelona debutant

Returning from his World Cup-ending injury, Neymar combined with Lionel Messi on Sunday to set up a winning goal for a teenage newcomer to Barcelona. Substitute Sandro Ramirez, a Barca academy graduate, had been on the field only 12 minutes when he scored in a 1-0 victory at Villarreal. The goal maintained Barcelona's perfect start to the Spanish league. In England, Liverpool convincingly beat Tottenham while Arsenal slumped to its second draw in three matches. The best of the action from Europe's top leagues Sunday: ___ SPAIN Barcelona was held in check by Villarreal until the 82nd minute, when Messi took Neymar's pass and drew goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo off his line before picking out Ramirez to push the winner into the net. Messi had previously been denied twice by the goal frame when Asenjo blocked his free kick onto the post in the 28th and his shot stuck the upright in the 76th. But he delivered when hemmed in by Asenjo and a defender on the right side of the goal, sque...

Fighter War Machine extradited to Nevada

Mix martial arts fighter War Machine has been extradited to Las Vegas to face charges he brutally beat his porn star ex-girlfriend. The man born Jonathan Koppenhaver was booked early Saturday morning into the Clark County jail after waiving extradition in a Ventura County, California, courtroom following his arrest. The 32-year-old Koppenhaver is accused of beating Christy Mack and her male friend at her Las Vegas home on Aug. 8 before fleeing to the Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley, where he was arrested a week later. A Las Vegas police spokesman says Koppenhaver wasn't currently available for jailhouse interviews, and it wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney. Koppenhaver legally changed his name to War Machine in recent years, but police refer to him by his birth name. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1B5Vtxs

IndyCar driver Aleshin healing after Fontana crash

Rookie IndyCar driver Mikhail Aleshin has been upgraded to stable condition after undergoing a procedure for a chest injury from his horrific crash during a practice session. IndyCar announced Aleshin's improvement Saturday before its season-ending race at Fontana. Aleshin was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center on Friday night after his car flew and spun into the air in Turn 4 at Fontana. The Russian driver spun up the track and collided with Charlie Kimball, and Aleshin's car ripped a large hole in the catch fencing. Aleshin was taken from the track in an ambulance and airlifted to the hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition with broken ribs, a broken right collarbone, a concussion and an unspecified chest injury. Aleshin is 15th in the IndyCar points standings. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1vyy0VF

Isner loses to Kohlschreiber in US Open 3rd round

Once again, John Isner's trip to Flushing Meadows ended in the third round. Once again, it happened with a loss to Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber at that stage. And once again, there are zero American men in the U.S. Open's round of 16 — something that had never happened until last year at the country's tennis championship, which was first played in 1881. On a windy, cloudy evening, the 13th-seeded Isner hit 42 aces, saved all five break points he faced — and yet it wasn't enough. Unable to capitalize on plenty of chances, and surprisingly outplayed in a trio of tiebreakers, Isner lost to the 22nd-seeded Kohlschreiber 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4). It was the third year in a row that these two men faced each other in the third round in New York, and Kohlschreiber won them all. He eliminated the big-serving, 6-foot-10 Isner in five sets in 2012, and in four sets in 2013. The 29-year-old Isner is best known for winning the longest match in tennis history, an 11-plus...

Cuba gives US swimmer Diana Nyad sporting medal

One year after becoming the first person confirmed to have swum from Havana to Key West, Florida without a shark cage, U.S. endurance swimmer Diana Nyad was back in Cuba to receive that country's Order of Sporting Merit award. After a ceremony led by First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Saturday, Nyad said she dreams of uniting Cubans and Americans to walk with her the length of the island of Cuba "as good neighbors and friends." Diaz-Canel called Nyad's feat "a symbol of the friendship between our peoples," referring to the United States and Cuba. Nyad attempted the swim from Cuba to Florida four times before finally completing the journey on her fifth attempt one year ago, making her the first to make it without a shark cage. via Sify.com http://ift.tt/1vyy0ER

Sims starts, finishes, Alabama beats WVU, 33-23

Blake Sims was good enough to finish his first start at quarterback for Alabama, getting plenty of help from Amari Cooper, T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry, and the second-ranked Crimson Tide held off West Virginia 33-23 Saturday. Sims was 24-for-33 for 250 yards and added 42 running, playing the entire opener at the Georgia Dome. The fifth-year senior beat out Florida State transfer Jake Coker for the start. Tide coach Nick Saban had suggested both quarterbacks would play, but Sims never came out. Yeldon (126 yards rushing and two touchdowns), Henry (113 yards rushing and a score) and Cooper (12 catches for 130 yards) provided plenty of support. Alabama needed all the offense it could get because West Virginia found plenty of soft spots in the Tide's D. The Mountaineers' up-tempo spread gave Clint Trickett his pick of open receivers, and he took advantage with 365 yards passing. But West Virginia didn't take full advantage, dropping more than a half-dozen catchable pass, incl...

No. 11 Stanford routs UC Davis 45-0 in opener

Ty Montgomery returned his first career punt for a touchdown and caught five passes for 77 yards and another score, and No. 11 Stanford tuned up for a date with No. 15 Southern California next week by routing UC Davis 45-0 on Saturday. The All-American kick returner, who was cleared by team doctors to play earlier this week after offseason surgery on his right shoulder, looked ready to be the Cardinal's do-it-all playmaker again. He ran his first punt back 60 yards for a TD and lined up all over the field, including once as a wildcat quarterback. Stanford led 38-0 at the half and rested most of its starters the final two quarters. Kevin Hogan threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns to help the two-time defending Pac-12 champions get off to a mostly smooth start. He completed 12 of 16 passes and had one interception. Stanford's retooled defense held the Aggies to 115 total yards, forced three turnovers and sacked London Lacy four times to overwhelm the lower-tier Football Champ...

No. 24 Missouri defeats South Dakota St 38-18

Maty Mauk threw for 178 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 24 Missouri past South Dakota State 38-18 in the season opener for both teams Saturday. Mauk seemed at ease early, finding receiver Darius White crossing behind the Jackrabbits' defense for a 44-yard touchdown pass just 50 seconds into the game. The Tigers extended their lead to 21-10 at halftime and never trailed. Zach Zenner rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries for South Dakota State (0-1), who fell to 0-7 against FBS teams since moving to Division I in 2004. Zach Lujan completed 21 of 28 passes for 239 yards and an interception in place of Austin Sumner, who left the game in the first quarter and did not return. Missouri moved to 14-0 all-time against Football Championship Subdivision teams and has won 13 consecutive season openers. The Tigers' early 7-0 lead lasted only one play thanks to a 75-yard touchdown run by Zenner, but Mauk found White again on the third drive, this time for a 39-yard pa...

Ameer Abdullah ran for a career-high 232 yards, Tommy Armstrong Jr. passed for a career-high 271 yards and two TDs, and No. 22 Nebraska defeated Florida Atlantic 55-7 on Saturday. The Cornhuskers rushed for 498 of their 784 total yards, the fifth-most in their program's 125-year history. They won their 29th straight opener, the longest streak in the nation. Abdullah had 178 yards by half while becoming the eighth Nebraska player to go over 3,000 yards rushing in a career. Terrell Newby added 107 yards rushing. Florida Atlantic, with first-year coach Charlie Partridge, was paid $1 million to visit Lincoln and will get another $1 million for playing at No. 2 Alabama next week. Boy who won ESPY for TD run now in cancer trial

The 8-year-old cancer patient who became an Internet sensation for his touchdown run in Nebraska's 2013 spring football scrimmage is now one of a handful of children enrolled in a cancer treatment trial. Jack Hoffman is the fourth child enrolled in a clinical trial at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Boston Children's Hospital, The Omaha World-Herald reported (http://bit.ly/1pUTdWo ) Saturday. He is one of 14 children in the world who have taken the medication, which is an adult cancer drug now being tested in children. Jack's family announced earlier this month that the boy's brain cancer had returned after he had been declared in remission last October. The tumor is inoperable, doctors told his family. The drug Jack is taking, like most cancer drugs, is toxic. In adults, the pills pose a secondary cancer risk — a form of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma — and could harm other organs, Dr. Mark Kieran, clinical director of the Brain Tumor Center at Dana-Far...
