I have become less selfish now, admits Messi

Barcelona: Admitting that he has now become less selfish with age, star FC Barcelona forward said he has evolved into more of a team player. "Before, I used to try to steal the ball and make something happen on my own -- or at least try to do something on my own," Messi told America TV. "Now, I try to make the team play more. I pass the ball more and I try not to be so selfish, if you will. I try to move the team from one position to another. I still run as much as ever, just in a different way," the 30-year old, regarded as one of the world's best footballers, added. Messi, 30, racked up 100 Champions League goals with a brace against Chelsea on Wednesday and is Spanish La Liga's top scorer with 24 goals. Messi also has 12 assists to his name. The Argentine now plays in a more deeper position, often dropping into his own half to get on the ball in central positions and dictate play. Messi was at his sublime best against Chelsea, ripping the English P...

Messi powers Barca into Champions league QF

Barcelona: A magical performance by Leo Messi -- two goals and an assist -- vaulted Barcelona into the quarterfinals of the 2017-2018 Champions League with a 3-0 win here over Chelsea in the second leg of their round of 16 tie. With the score knotted at 1-1 after the first leg in London, both sides knew the importance of scoring the first goal, Efe news reported. But the Blues found themselves trailing before their first touch on Wednesday, with Messi scoring at close range barely two minutes into the contest to the delight of the 97,000-plus crowd in the stands at Camp Nou. The Argentine superstar smiled broadly and dedicated the goal to his newborn son, Ciro. With their original game plan in tatters, Chelsea were forced to go forward behind Eden Hazard and the visitors dominated possession for the next 18 minutes, though the only real threat was a Willian shot that forced a save from Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the 12th minute. In the 20th minute, however, Messi stole the ball fr...

Panchkula: Minerva Punjab FC created history by becoming the first team from North India in the history of Hero I-League to win the crown jewel of Indian Football. William’s goal was enough to seal the title for Minerva Punjab who beat Churchill Brothers by a solitary goal today. This is a landmark moment in Indian Football where two relegation threatened teams have won back to back I-League titles. Last year it was Aizawl, this year it is Minerva Punjab from Chandigarh. Churchill Brothers on the other hand got relegated after this defeat demotes them to 2nd division. Minerva Punjab started the first half really well. The attacking trio of Chencho, William and Girik combining really well to put Churchill’s defence in jeopardy. Chencho almost scored the match’s opener in 8th minute when a low Girik Khosla cross wasn’t dealt with properly by Monday which gave Chencho a chance but he couldn’t make full use of it. Minutes later Akash Sangwan had an opportunity to score from Left but his ...

Watch: Messi's magical 600th career goal sinks Atletico Madrid

FC Barcelona stretched their lead at the summit of La Liga to eight points after a hard fought win against closest title challengers Atletico Madrid. The Madrid outfit were looking to inflict on the Catalan side their first league defeat of the season and also cut the gap at the top of the table to just two points. Having won 14 of their previous 16 league games, Atletico went to the Camp Nou high on confidence, especially as Antoine Griezmann was in red-hot form, scoring seven of the nine goals in their last two league outings. Adding fuel to the fire was Barca's recent stutter in the league, who drew three of their last five La Liga encounters. However, the Rojiblancos had to return home empty handed as a sumptuous 26th minute free kick by the talismanic Argentine Lionel Messi, who scored his 600th goal for club and country, was enough to hand Barca all three points and land them in the pole position for the league title. Atletico's attack was marginalised for most of...

Jamshedpur: FC Goa rode on Spanish striker Ferran Corominas' brace either side of halftime to qualify for the Indian Super League (ISL) play-offs in a virtual knockout clash against Jamshedpur FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex here on Sunday. Top-scorer in the league Corominas scored in the 29th and 51st minute with Manuel Lanzarote (69th) adding gloss to the scoreline. Jamshedpur, placed fifth on the points table with 26 points from 17 games, had to win the game to make the cut while a draw would have been enough for the visitors who were on 27 points from 17 games. Goa, who finished with 30 points, joined Bengaluru FC, Chennaiyin FC and FC Pune City to complete the list of teams who will vie for the silverware this season. While Goa will now take on Chennaiyin, Bengaluru will play Pune for a place in the final. In a rare incident, both keepers were sent off in each half for handling the ball outside the box. First, hosts' veteran India custodian Subrata Paul came out ...
