Brazil striker Robinho handed 9-year term for rape in Italy

Milan: An Italian court sentenced former AC Milan and Brazil forward Robinho in absentia to nine years in prison on Thursday after convicting him of taking part in a gang rape of an Albanian woman in 2013. A Milan court ruled that Robinho and five other Brazilians assaulted the woman, who was 22 at the time, after plying her with alcohol in a discotheque. The whereabouts of Robinho’s five companions is not known, so their trial has been put on hold. Robinho, 33, who currently plays with Atletico Mineiro in Brazil, pleaded not guilty via his lawyer and never appeared at any of the court hearings in northern Italy. “We would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the accusations, affirming that he did not participate in the episode,” said a statement posted on Robinho’s Instagram feed. “All legal measures are being taken.” Robinho has a right to two appeals and Italy would only seek extradition once this legal process is exhausted, a legal source said. ISL: FC Goa pip Chennaiyin FC in 5-goal thriller

Image Courtesy: ISL Chennai: FC Goa saw off a stirring fightback from Chennaiyin FC as they won 3-2 in their opening match of the fourth Indian Super League (ISL) here on Sunday. Goals from Ferran Corominas Telechea (25th minute), Manuel Lanzarote Bruno (29th), Mandar Rao Desai (39th) exposed Chennaiyin's weaknesses in their defensive structure in the first half. Down 0-3 at half-time, Chennayin came roaring back as Spanish Inigo Calderon's free-kick was poorly handled by Goan custodian Laxmikant Kattiani in the 70th minute. Raphael Augusto converted a penalty 13 minutes later to give some nervous moments to Goa but the visiting outfit managed to seal a close win. The first two matches of this ISL season went goalless and at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here, the two teams didn't have signs of ending the drought at the beginning. Both the teams were sluggish and it took 19 minutes for Goa to show their intent. Telechea nicely set-up Brandon Fernandes with only the k...

Neither team took a lot of time to warm up, with both defences opening up in the early exchanges. Milan Singh's rasping shot narrowly past the post within the first five minutes but the best chance of the first 45 minutes fell to ATK's Hitesh Sharma. The ball fell kindly for him after a good play down the right by Rupert Nongrum, and his shot from a one-on-one situation was parried away by on-rushing goalkeeper Paul Rachubka. Stunned Italy fail to reach World Cup for the first time in 60 years

Milan: Italian football boss Carlo Tavecchio said recently that failure to qualify for the World Cup would be the apocalypse and his worst fears came true on Monday as they missed out on the finals for the first time in 60 years. A desperate 0-0 draw at home to a defiant, belligerent and technically inferior Sweden ended the four-time world champions’ hopes of reaching next year’s finals in Russia and with it the international careers of several of Italy’s biggest names. The Swedes, whose starting lineup included only four players based with teams in Europe’s so-called big five leagues, will take their place after qualifying for the first time since 2006. Italy’s 1-0 aggregate defeat in their European playoff, after Jakob Johansson’s deflected strike in Stockholm, is likely to go down alongside elimination by North Korea at the 1966 World Cup as one of their greatest football debacles. The Italians have only failed to qualify for the tournament once before - missing out on the 19...
