U-17 World Cup: Weah's hat-trick flattens Paraguay in pre-quarters

New Delhi: Tim Weah scored thrice as the United States swept past Paraguay 5-0 to storm into the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Monday. Tim, son of former World Player of the Year, African Player of the Century and Liberian football legend George Weah, bulged the net in the 19th, 53rd and 77th minutes. In the previous three matches, he had not scored but on the day he did, the Paris Saint-Germain talent gave a good account of his lineage. Andrew Carleton (63rd) and Josh Sargent (74th) were the scorers of the other two goals. Paraguay showed their typical aggressive box-to-box football from the start. Though they created a couple of half chances, the finishing was lacking. An unmarked Leonardo Sanchex failed to reach a cross from the right. Then attacking midfielder Alan Rodriguez saw couple of his darting runs being halted in front of the goal. The Americans absorbed the pressure and waited for the counter-attack chances. P...

FIFA Under-17 World Cup tournament director Javier Ceppi on Sunday said the event has been more successful than the ICC World Cup 2011 in terms of spectators turnout, adding the "doors are now open" for India to get next edition's U-20 World Cup. Taking a 36-match cut-off after the end of group stage, Ceppi said the spectators mark has crossed a phenomenal 800,000, which is more than the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and double than what the last edition in Chile had witnessed. "This was a make or break. If you're not able to deliver then the doors would have closed definitely. Now the doors remain open. How it's done in the future we need to see. Possibility will be there for Indian football," Ceppi said about India's bid for hosting the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2019. "At this point of time, we are looking at a record attendance here in India 2017. It's also over with the first 36 matches of the ICC World Cup 2011 which is usually considered here...

New Delhi: Ghana rode on a brace by skipper Eric Ayiah to enter the knockout stages with a 4-0 win over India in their Group A match of the FIFA U-17 World Cup here on Thursday. Richard Danso (86th) and Emmanuel Toku (87th) scored in quick succession towards the end. India ended their maiden appearance at a football World Cup in any age group without opening their account and only one goal to show for their efforts. Ghana dominated right from the start and took the lead when their captain Eric Ayiah made a superb run from his own half before scoring off the rebound when Indian goalkeeper Dheeraj Moirangthem blocked a pass from Sadiq Ibrahim. That goal was preceded by a lengthy period of tough, stubborn defending by the Indians. The Indian players however, ran out of ideas in the final third. They showed a distinct lack of composure when in possessi...

Both India and Colombia were looking to find their first victory in the tournament, after losing to the US and Ghana respectively in their initial fixtures. Monday's loss means that India will have to beat Ghana by a big margin in their last group match and hope that Colombia lose to the US in order to enter the knockout phase. India coach Luis Norton de Matos started with their star winger Komal Thatal on b...

The Asian powerhouse took the lead in the 16th minute through their star striker Mohammed Dawood, before Mexico's Roberto de la Rosa cancelled the advantage in the 51st minute at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan before around 46,000 spectators. Having lost all their group matches in their only other appearance in the U-17 World Cup four years ago, the Iraqis have now got their first ever point in the tournament. Guwahati: Amine Gouiri fired a brace as France overpowered debutants New Caledonia 7-1 in a lopsided Group E opener of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here on Sunday. An early own goal from Bernard Iwa in the fifth minute was a sign of things to come as Gouiri (19th and 33rd minutes), Maxence Caqueret (40th) and own goal from Kiam Wanesse in the 43rd minute killed the contest. New Caledonia, a French-administered territory, improved their performance in the second half. Even though France dropped their guard in the second half, their flank players were relentless and they kept attacking. Early into the second half, New Caledonia goalkeeper Kecine dived to his right to save a penalty from Caqueret. From this moment, Kecine grew in confidence and made few fine saves. In the 90th minute, Sidri Wadenges scored goal from a header to mark New Caledonia's maiden goal at a FIFA tournament. B...

Gomes starts from bench, scores wondrous free kick

Image Courtesy: FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 Kolkata: Highly-rated Manchester United winger Angel Gomes stamped his class 14 minutes after coming off the bench by swerving in a wondrous free kick to round off a 4-0 win for England over Chile in the Group F opener of the FIFA U-17 World Cup at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan here on Sunday. Gomes was conspicuous by his absence from England's starting XI but once he replaced Callum Hudson-Odoi in the 67th minute, the United U-18s skipper was all over the pitch lifting England's already high standards of play by another notch. Gomes stood over the free kick his team earned after striker Rhian Brewster was fouled just outside the area by Chile goalkeeper Julio Borquez. While Chile reeled in the aftermath of Borquez being given marching orders for his folly, England basked in the superb curling effort of Gomes which nestled into the top left corner of the net. England increased their margin to 4-0 and the match ended with t...
