Will give youngsters another chance in final ODI: Kohli

India Skipper Virat Kohli said that he would continue to experiment with the team's batting line-up in the fifth ODI and that he will give more chances to the youngsters. Batting first, India posted a mammoth score of 375-5 in the fourth ODI with both Kohli (131 off 96 balls) and Rohit Sharma (104 off 88 balls) scoring centuries. The Indian bowlers then joined the party by dismissing Sri Lanka for 207 in 42.4 overs to take a 4-0 lead in the five-match series. "It was a good game for us. We spoke about not getting complacent at any stage and today was a clinical performance," said Kohli," who was adjudged the Man of the Match for his scintillating innings. Talking about the toss, Kohli said "We wanted to bat first because we hadn't batted first in the three games. The wicket was amazing to bat on. It was a good toss to win, we put up a good score and it was very difficult for the opposition to maintain that required run rate." Asked if he would con...

India hand Lanka their heaviest home defeat

IND vs SL, 4th ODI - Scorecard | India vs Sri Lanka - Complete Coverage | Full Schedule Colombo: India bulldozed Sri Lanka by 168 runs in the fourth one-day international on Thursday after skipper Virat Kohli and opener Rohit Sharma smashed blistering hundreds to put the tourists 4-0 up in the five-match series. The result was Sri Lanka’s biggest ODI defeat on home soil in terms of runs and leaves them unable to claim the two victories they needed in the series to ensure automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup. Sri Lanka were also whiteashed 3-0 by India in the preceding test series, prompting the entire selection panel to resign. With the ODI series already in the bag, India amassed 375-5 after electing to bat and had looked on course for a 400-plus total while Kohli and Sharma were at the crease. Not that it really mattered as Sri Lanka collapsed to 207 in 42.4 overs in reply, with only Angelo Mathews offering any real resistance with a fighting 70. India lost opener...

IND vs SL, 4th ODI - Scorecard | India vs Sri Lanka - Complete Coverage | Full Schedule Colombo: Brilliant centuries from skipper Virat Kohli (131) and Rohit Sharma (104) helped India post a mammoth 375/5 in the fourth One-Day International match against Sri Lanka here on Thursday. It was a good day for Indian batsmen as Kohli returned to form, ending a series of poor scores over the last few matches. The Indian skipper blasted the Sri Lankan bowlers and opener Rohit supported him well. Both treated the balls on merit and punished the bad deliveries. At one point, Sri Lankan players seemed helpless as Kohli and Rohit started belting the bowlers. But after scoring around 200 runs in 25 overs with nine wickets in hands, India appeared to have lost the plot as three wickets tumbled quickly. Then Mahendra Singh Dhoni (49 not out) and Manish Pandey (50 not out) got together and added crucial runs to post a challenging total for India. On the other hand, the hosts struggled despite ...

Chinese magnate revamps Hollywood deal amid crackdown on overseas investment

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - A Chinese magnate, known for the purchase of English soccer club Aston Villa, has revised a plan to buy the majority of a Hollywood studio for $100 million due to increased government scrutiny over outbound deals in the entertainment sector. Tony Xia said in a tweet on Thursday he would no longer conduct the acquisition via his listed firm Recon Wenyuan Cable Co Ltd, but through a separate non-listed entity due to a "new Chinese policy of film industry restriction." The government has been tightening regulation following big-money deals overseas, especially in areas such as film, sports and real estate, due to concern about high levels of debt. It has also restricted the export of capital to deter investment abroad, particularly in sectors unrelated to a firm's core business, in the hope of stemming depreciation of the yuan. In February, Recon Wenyuan said it planned to spend up to $100 million to buy 51 percent of Millennium Film, whose ...

Sharapova sees off Babos to extend New York stay

Maria Sharapova extended her grand slam comeback when the former world number one defeated Hungary’s Timea Babos 6-7(4) 6-4 6-1 on Wednesday to advance to the U.S. Open third round. The Russian, in her first appearance at a major since she returned from a 15-month doping ban in April, did not have the same inspiration that helped her beat world number two Simona Halep in the opening round. Sharapova, who was granted a wildcard entry to the tournament, made too many unforced errors in a scrappy first set that featured six breaks of serve. Once she found her groove midway through the second set, however, the 30-year-old, sporting a pale peach pink crystal-encrusted dress, eventually shone like a diamond, tossing Babos aside in a one-sided decider. The Hungarian bowed out on the second match point when she sailed a backhand long, triggering a huge roar on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Russian has a clear path to the semi-finals, where she could meet tournament favourite Garbine Muguruza ...

Premadasa Stadium here on Thursday. In the coming match, with some experienced player failing to make their mark, Dhoni and Rohit will look to continue their fine form to help the visitors continue their unbeaten run. Star Batsmen Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Lokesh Rahul and Kedar Jadhav will try to get back to scoring after putting up a failed show in the previous matches. Skipper Kohli might opt to make changes after playing with the unchanged side in the first three ODIs. PCB bans cricketer Sharjeel Khan for five years

Karachi: Left-handed batsman Sharjeel Khan was on Wednesday handed over a five-year ban by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)-appointed Anti-Corruption Unit in connection with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) spot-fixing case. Sharjeel was facing five major charges of breaches of the PCB's anti-corruption code and was found guilty for all five. According to the Dawn, he will not be able to play any form of cricket for at least 30 months, after which he may be allowed to play domestic cricket until the completion of the ban - subject to the terms and conditions set by the PCB. The spot-fixing allegation relates to a match between Sharjeel's team Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi in Dubai in February during the second edition of the PSL which the left-handed batsman scored a single off four deliveries including two dot balls. On March 6, a three-member tribunal was formed by the PCB to investigate the spot-fixing case allegedly involving Sharjeel and Khalid Latif. Asghat Haider...

Shakib brilliance helps Bangladesh humble Australia

Bangladesh spun their way to a first test victory over Australia on Wednesday, with Shakib Al Hasan’s second five-wicket haul of the match securing a memorable 20-run win inside four days at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Overnight batsman David Warner struck a belligerent 112 and added 130 runs with skipper Steve Smith but their efforts were in vain as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Chasing 265 to win, Australia lost five wickets in an eventful morning session, and whatever hopes they had were snuffed out when Shakib bowled Glenn Maxwell with the first delivery after the lunch break. Pat Cummins scored an unbeaten 33 down the order to inject some drama but it was not enough in the end as Australia were all out for 244. Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim was delighted to record the country’s first victory over Australia. “Obviously a great feeling, beating Australia,” he said at the presentation ceremony. “A great effort by the boys, especially Shakib and...

Federer survives Tiafoe scare to advance at the U.S. Open

World number three Roger Federer survived a first-round scare from Frances Tiafoe before grinding out a 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 6-4 victory over the American teenager in front of a raucous crowd at the U.S. Open on Tuesday. Federer looked more relieved than overjoyed when Tiafoe’s forehand found the net on match point to keep his hopes of a 20th grand slam title alive. "We had a good fight," Federer said in an on-court interview. "It was exciting and this is why I came to New York, to go through these emotions," he said with a laugh. The 19-year-old Tiafoe broke Federer in the first game of the match and bellowed out a loud "Come on!" when his forehand winner found the line to capture the opening set. Federer, who has won this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon since taking a six-month break last year, soon found his groove once he broke Tiafoe to take a 3-1 lead in the second set and reeled off nine of the next 10 games. However, his poor form returned in...

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday gave away the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to former India hockey team captain Sardar Singh and Paralympics double gold medallist and world record holder Devendra Jhajharia at a function at Rashtrapati Bhawan here on the occasion of National Sports Day. It was the first gold medal for India at the Paralympics since Murlikant Petkar finished at the top of the podium in men's 50m freestyle swimming at Heidelberg, Germany, in 1972. Sharapova sparkles on return to grand slam stage

Maria Sharapova proved she will be someone to contend with for the U.S. Open crown after the Russian wild card outlasted second seed Simona Halep 6-4 4-6 6-3 on Monday to get the year’s final grand slam off to an electrifying start. Still shaking off the rust from a 15-month doping ban and a string of nagging injuries, the 30-year-old Sharapova needed all her skill, determination and two hours and 44 minutes to snatch victory in front of a packed Arthur Ashe stadium. The victory becomes the highlight of what has been a torturous comeback for the former world number one, who returned to tennis in April after being banned for testing positive for metabolic modulator meldonium at last year’s Australian Open. Her progress has been slowed by a thigh injury that forced her out of the Italian Open in May and more recently left arm issues that took her out of the second round at Stanford earlier this month. However, there was no hint of distress against an in-form Halep as she improved he...

Will play against Pakistan even if my one leg is not there: Dhoni

National selector MSK Prasad narrated an incident that highlighted former India skipper MS Dhoni's commitment and love for the game. Dhoni was almost ruled out for an intense India-Pakistan match in the Asia Cup last year after he suffered an injury. However, the skipper's s determination saw him not only turning up for the game but also winning it. Speaking at a function, the Chairman of the selection committee said such was Dhoni's commitment that the former skipper asked him not to worry and that he would play against Pakistan even "if my one leg is not there." Narrating the incident, he said, "While training at the gym late in the night, Dhoni picked up weights and suddenly there was a catch in his back and he fell with the weight. "Thankfully, the weight did not fall on him. He could not walk, he was literally crawling. He was taken on a stretcher." "So, I went to Dhoni's room to know what the issue was. He said, 'don't w...

Arsenal performance 'absolutely disastrous', says Wenger

Liverpool: Arsenal's performance in their 4-0 Premier League loss at Liverpool on Sunday was "absolutely disastrous", their manager Arsene Wenger said after a game in which the club's fans again called for his removal. A lacklustre Arsenal were outplayed by a rampant Liverpool with some dreadful defensive mistakes and a complete absence of energy throughout the side. "The result is a consequence of our performance. We were not good enough. We were beaten everywhere physically, in the end I believe we made it easier for them, and the mistakes gave them a cushion," Wenger told reporters. "Our performance was absolutely disastrous. Not to become too emotional, we have to take some distance, and there are some reasons behind it, and the players now go on their international break, but we do have to take the consequences of our performance today," added the Frenchman. "If you find a manager who is happy with that performance today, I wish yo...

At 46, Japan's Kimiko Date calls time on career

Tokyo: Japan's Kimiko Date called time on her tennis career at the age of 46 on Monday, saying she was no longer able to perform at the best of her abilities due to physical issues and had decided to listen to the "inner voice" telling her it was time to quit. The former world number four has been invited to play in next month's Japan Women's Open, barely two weeks before she turns 47, and wrote on her blog that it would be her last appearance. Date made a comeback to the court in May after undergoing multiple surgeries, including a knee cartilage transplant earlier this year. "I was determined to continue my challenge until the day I could no longer ignore my inner voice," she wrote, saying that while her knee was not giving her pain an old shoulder injury had begun to act up. "I had survived painful knee surgery, overcome harsh rehabilitation and hard training to get in shape to play in a tournament, which I feel is a great accomplishment. H...

'Deliberate ban can save Stokes from missing Ashes Test'

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has suggested all-rounder Ben Stokes to earn another demerit point in the third Test of the ongoing series against West Indies in order to avoid a ban during the Ashes this summer. Stokes picked up his third demerit point for making an "inappropriate comment" during the second day's play in the ongoing second Test against West Indies at the Headingley, Leeds. The incident happened in the 101st over of the Windies innings, when Stokes reacted in frustration after being edged by Shai Hope for a boundary by making an inappropriate comment, which was clearly audible through the stump mic and also heard by the match officials. If he gets another demerit point, he would be suspended for either his next Test match or two limited-overs internationals, leaving the possibility of him being out of the first Ashes Test. But if the 26-year-old earns a demerit point in either the third Test or the six white-ball internationals that follow agai...

"This a very important outcome for Test cricket lovers in New Zealand - simply because it allows us the opportunity to play the game at a time when more people can engage with it. We're sure it will be a very successful event, and that English and New Zealand fans alike will make the most of the opportunity," ESPNcricinfo quoted Crummy as saying. MS Dhoni irreplaceable till 2019 World Cup: Sehwag

Former legendary India batsman Virender Sehwag has come out strongly in support of MS Dhoni and said that the World Cup winning skipper should be a part of 2019 World Cup squad. "I don't think anyone can replace Dhoni at this point of time. Rishabh Pant is good but he would also need time to replace him. But that can only happen after 2019. It's then when we should think about Dhoni's replacement. Till then let Pant gain experience," Sehwag told PTI . Sehwag further said that fans should pray that Dhoni remains fit rather than focusing on his batting. "We should not worry about whether Dhoni is scoring runs or not. We should only pray that MS Dhoni is fit till 2019 World Cup. The experience that he has in the middle and the lower middle order, no one has that," said Sehwag. For Sehwag, Dhoni's entire career is a definition of 'cycle of life'. "Like life, the beauty of sports is that no two periods are identical. You will have to de...

Rohit, Bumrah shine as India pocket series

Pallekele: Opener Rohit Sharma's brilliant unbeaten ton helped India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets to seal the five match One-Day International series 3-0 here on Sunday. The duo forged an unbeaten 157-run partnership for the fifth wicket but just when eight runs were needed, the crowd hurled bottles in the ground and the match had to be stopped. Sri Lanka batsmen Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have been roped in the ODI squad for the remaining three games of the five-match series against India. The duo has been called in the squad after the International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed a two-match ban on skipper Upul Tharanga for a slow over rate offence. Lanka were ruled to be three overs short during their nerve-wracking three-wicket defeat at the hands of India in the second ODI to go 0-2 down in the ongoing series in Pallekele. Match Referee Andy Pycroft imposed the ban on Tharanga, who previously served a similar two-match suspension during the ICC Champions Trophy when Sri Lanka were found guilty of slow over rate during their tournament opener against South Africa. Test skipper Chandimal, who was surprisingly dropped from the original squad, is likely to come in Tharanga's place at number four spot in the batting order, Sport24 reported. Thirimanne, who made his last international ODI appearance in Janu...

Great expectations on Pandya as India eye overseas success

Mumbai: The comparisons with Kapil Dev may be premature only three matches into his Test career but all-rounder Hardik Pandya is already shaping up as a key man in India’s mission to conquer the world. Since the retirement of former captain Dev in 1994, India have been engaged in a perpetual search for an all-rounder who can bowl medium pace and score vital runs down the batting order. While the country has produced a plethora of spin-bowling all-rounders who suit their needs in Asian conditions, tours of Australia, England and South Africa have exposed the need for a batsman who can turn his arm to fast bowling. The likes of Irfan Pathan, who played 29 Tests from 2003 to 2008, and more recently Stuart Binny have auditioned for the role but neither was able to convincingly make it their own. At 23, Pandya is already a regular member of India’s limited-overs sides and eased into the longest format of the game during India’s recent 3-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka. There were understand...

After going down in the first two ODIs, Tharanga will miss the Pallekele and Colombo matches scheduled on August 27 and 31, respectively. The charge was laid by on-field umpires Ranmore Martinesz and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth official Ruchira Palliyaguruge. "Andy Pycroft of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed the suspension after the Sri Lanka side was ruled to be three overs short of its target when time allowances were taken into consideration, International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement. In accordance with Article 2.5.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to serious over-rate offences, players were fined 10 per cent of their match fees for the first two overs and 20 per cent...
