Germany went 1-0 ahead through a Thomas Mueller penalty after Mario Goetze wriggled away from Joao Pereira and was hauled down. Pepe was sent off for shoving his forehead into Mueller's before the end of the first half. ?The penalty was forced,? added Bento, seemingly suggesting that Mueller, who was sitting on the turf when an incensed Pepe came back to accost him, was guilty of instigating the situation that had the Portugal defender red carded by Milorad Mazic of Serbia. ?I don?t know if he was sent off because of his reputation,? said the coac...

'Tendulkar to promote 2015 World Cup'

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will play "some sort of a role" in promoting the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand early next year, tournament CEO John Harnden has said. "He (Tendulkar) has been a fantastic supporter of the World Cup. It is too early to say anything about his involvement but I am sure he will play some sort of a role in lead-up to the tournament. We will have to wait and see," Harnden told PTI during a chat here. Part of the promotion strategy is to get a range of current and former players talking about the Feb 14-March 29 mega event, Harnden said. The organisers did two events in Mumbai and Delhi last week in the presence of former India players Ravi Shastri and Chetan Chauhan. "As we get closer to the tour tournament, more announcements will be made. The strategy is to use a lot of World Cup heroes. There are a whole range of players who have already helped us and will be helping us in the future as well," said Harnden. "...

World Cup wows fans after scintillating start

The opening round of games at the World Cup is almost over and the universal feeling is one of shock and awe. Fans have been served up a marvellous first few days of excitement, controversy and, most amazing of all, goals galore. None of the first 11 matches ended in draws, five were come from behind wins and the number of goals per game has averaged 3.36. Coming four years after the second-lowest scoring World Cup in history, with 2.27, fans can hardly believe it. "I think this has been the best start since at least Italy in 1990," said England fan Ross Letham who watched Argentina-Bosnia at the Fan Fest in Sao Paulo. "The World Cup has been dour and too tactical for years and this has been wide open." The tone was set in the opening match, when the tournament returned to football's spiritual home for the first time since 1950. Brazil recovered to beat Croatia 3-1 in a game that featured an early own goal and a controversial penalty. Le...
